Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

bedside crib or cot cots, also referred to as bassinets and co-sleepers, are designed to allow parents to sleep close to their infants at night, without the risk of SIDS. However they are only suitable for use up to 6 months when your baby is required to be moved into a cot or a moses basket.

MFM home tester Mehack loved that this model features an adjustable bassinet that you can use in the home and an option to rock manually. It was simple to put together, and came with its own travel bag.

Size

Cots and cot beds differ in terms of size and size, with cots being a bit smaller than beds for cots. Cots can also be converted into toddler beds. However they are typically intended for children who are the age of three. If you're opting for a wooden cot, there are typically two sizes to choose from that are large and standard both of which will convert into a cot/toddler mattress. If you wish for your child (or children) to be comfortable sleeping in a bigger cot, it's an excellent option to select the larger one.

Jasmine, an MFM mother who tested the product at home, said she liked that it was slightly larger than the typical Moses basket, but not too large for the baby's room. She says it's easy to lift her baby in and out for feeding or soothing and the quality is top-notch, compared with many she's seen that feel flimsy.

Another home-based test subject, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi Lora can be used in a variety of ways It's a bassinet that lifts off that you can move around the house, and it rocks too. It also has an incline of reflux as well as a machine washable liner that is breathable. It was also nominated for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. The Lora fits South African cot mattress unlike some international or European brands. This means you don't need to buy an entirely new mattress each time your baby grows. It does require a special bedding set (60x120cm). Here is the ideal mattress for your cot.

Height

When selecting a cot for the bed, look for one that can be raised to a height that is comfortable for you to feed your baby. It should also be able to be dropped down out of the way so that you can pull your baby towards you for feedings at night or to soothe. This is particularly useful if you are recovering from a C-section. For example, the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted up to a height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and Large Bedside Cot the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.

You should also consider the level you would like the base of your crib to be. Some mothers find it is easier to lift their children from their standard Moses baskets when the base is situated at the lowest level, while some prefer a higher elevation to give them more stability. One of our testers for mums mentioned that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular option. It is an easily collapsible side that you can push at the press of the button.

Be aware that a bassinet/bedside cot bed sleeper is only suitable until your baby is able to hold their head up unaided, usually at approximately 6 months. This is due to the possibility of suffocation. It is also important to be aware that when your child is old enough to be able to convert the bedside sleeper into a cot you will have to take the sides off when they are able to do this. This will prevent them from falling out or climbing out of the bed.

Design

There are a variety of cribs for bedside crib or cot use with a range of styles from simple to luxurious. The most luxurious models could include features such as a built-in night light and a calming centre which plays music and sounds and has two levels of vibrations to help soothe your baby back to sleep, or even a swivelling base that makes it easier to reach your baby for feedings. Some models can be converted into a toddler bed or cot (or both) when your child is ready to go to their own bed.

The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air For instance has won Bronze at the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards for the Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib category. It has a swivelling bottom that lets you pick up your baby and move them to the other side of the crib without having to get out of the bed. This is great for new mums recovering from Caesarean sections, or those who need to stay in bed for extended periods. Jasmine is an MFM mom who tried this product at home, said it was simple to use and made it easier to reach her baby, especially after the C-section.

Chicco Next2me Magic is another option. It was awarded Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the Best Cot, Moses Basket, or Crib and has a machine-washable liner, reflux incline, and a rocking feature. It's a bit larger than other cribs that we've looked at, but it folds flat in its travel bag, so it's relatively compact when not in use.

'It has an excellent design that is incredibly simple to operate and is extremely sturdy. She said that the bassinet's swivelling base was brilliant because it let you move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lower to facilitate access for moms who are recovering from C-sections.

Safety

A large bedside cot's main safety characteristic is the fact that it can be easily adjusted or moved so that parents can reach their child to feed or comfort them, or change his or her nappies. This makes it ideal for new mothers recovering from the C-section. It is recommended to choose the design that allows you to lower the bed's side with a single button press. This will allow you to raise your child without getting out of bed. This is essential, especially when your baby grows and becomes more mobile. Beware of items that could increase the chance of injury or suffocation such as duvets and Large Bedside Cot pillowcases, which can cause your baby to overheat.

The CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to product issues like gaps between the bedside cot bed sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents); fabric-sided enclosed openings (11 incidents); consumer misassembly or missing parts (6 incidents); and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR in its NPR, the CPSC looked into the possibility of additional requirements for bedside sleepers, like the requirement that these products meet the minimum side height requirement for bassinets or at least meet the maximum height requirement for the lowered side rail. However, the CPSC concluded that such requirements would not be feasible or effective to reduce the number of incidents where infants were trapped between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed.

The majority of the incidents covered in the NPR concerned multi-use bedside sleepers that can be transformed into other modes, such as play yards or bassinets. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule a different provision for multiuse bedside sleepers to enable them to meet the minimum side-height requirement for bassinets using a removable attachment that can be connected permanently or disconnected when the product is not being used as an actual bassinet.

The CPSC is reviewing these comments and others received in response to the NPR on bedside sleeping. The Commission will consider these comments when deciding on the final rule that is expected to come out in November 2021.
