Smart mapping is another feature that allows it to identify areas in your home that require attention and provides a path for cleaning around them. This technology is very efficient in navigating toys left on the floor, or furniture legs sticking out from underneath objects. It also has a sensor that will snap Roomba to reality if it begins to wander away from its original position.

iRobot has also included a set of rollers underneath the Roomba that do not have bristles, and therefore are more likely to resist knots than earlier models. The rollers are also larger and can be tucked under beds or couches that are low. They're specifically designed to make this model more maneuverable on different flooring types.

The Roomba 980 stands out from other models of high-end quality by its brand new dirt detection feature, which uses cameras to detect embedded dirt. This is an improvement over the previous version which relied on the use of a sensor-driven pseudorandom cover to bounce around the room, and then clean everything three times at different angles.

In our tests of its performance, the Roomba 980 did well on both hard flooring and carpets. Its score on low pile carpet was impressive, and it scored a good score on mid pile too. It did a great job picking up pet hair however it struggled with the long and thick pet hair that was stuck together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the top performing robots on our list, despite these minor limitations. It's also not as expensive as top-of-the-line models. It comes with many of the features you'd expect from a top rated robot vacuum model, but it doesn't have all the fancy apps and smart home integration you'd see in other top models.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up in a matter of minutes and is ready for use immediately. After taking off the battery pull tab and yellow bin insert from undercarriage, all you need to do is plug it into its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, press its large "Clean" button, and let it go to work. It will automatically return to the dock when it runs out of battery or becomes full of trash. There are also indicator lights on top that indicate the bin is empty, or when it needs to recharge, or if it loses Wi-Fi.
