saab replacement key Key Programming

Saab cars built since about 1994 feature an immobilizer mechanism that is based on codes for keys. The addition of a key requires an entirely new transponder and programming. This is usually done by the dealer using a Tech2 diagnostic tool.

It can be costly. It is recommended to always have a spare set of keys in your possession.

Transponder key

The transponder key is a key with an electronic chip that sends a signal back to the car when it is put into the ignition. The car then examines the signal to determine if it matches that of the key. If both signals match, the car will unlock itself and start. This is a great way to protect your vehicle from theft.

Transponder keys are a common feature in automobiles, but you should be aware that they aren't as secure as classic metal keys. The metal component of the traditional keys can be easily copied and cut, but a transponder has an electronic chip that protects it. This chip contains a unique code encoded into the car's system to identify it.

Jump starting the battery

Most people keep a set of jumper cables in their trunk for emergencies, but jumping a battery on newer cars might not be the best option. These cars are equipped with a variety of digital and computer systems that communicate with one another. A voltage spike when a battery is hooked up to another could cause damage to the components and render your car unable to drive.

Connect the cables to the vehicle that is working. Allow it to run for two minutes. Attach the red clip to the positive terminal of the good battery. (It will read "POS" or "+".) Attach the other end of the black cable to a clean, unpainted metal surface under the disabled car's hood--the engine block is an ideal choice. The black cable should not be connected to the negative terminal of the dead battery. This could create sparks, which would ignite gasoline in the engine compartment.
