Chalk adds grip to the tip in order to improve your shots, create spin on the white ball, and prevent scratches (when the tip slips on the ball, which could cause you to miss your shot). 100 years later, Mingaud had the brilliant idea (during a stay in prison) of adding a bit of leather (also called the tip) to his cue, allowing him to create spin (which modifies the natural trajectory of the white ball). A scratch is when a player pockets the white cue ball at any point during their turn. The game only has three balls, which are red, white (with a spot), and another white one (without a spot). It will be different based on the size of the balls, and therefore on the game. Pool can be played with eight balls, which consist of 15 balls. If the eight ball ends the round anywhere besides the playing surface of the table, it is an automatic loss. Suppose you want to play a game of billiards (or pool, or snooker, or whatever takes your fancy), but instead of playing on a rectangular table, you play it on an elliptical table. Their ball crosses into their opponent's half of the table, or hits the side rail.

Each player stands next to each other behind the head rail and places their ball behind the head string. The head string is an imaginary line between the second pair of diamonds (see above diagram). When playing by official rules, you are not allowed to hit your opponent's object balls first when taking a shot. According to the rules, each round continued until a man went down. You can determine play order however you want, but the official way to determine turn order in 8 ball is a lag for the opening break. Next, in order to improve, you will quickly need additional equipment such as new tips, extensions (especially for snooker: remember the size of a snooker table), or even your own balls.
