It is crucial that parents take part in the titration process and be aware of their child's behavior so that they can inform the doctor if the medication is helping or causing adverse effects.

If you decide to return to NHS treatment, you will receive an individual prescription for your medication. You will be required to pay for your prescription at the pharmacy. This is not included in the consultation cost. You will need to attend six-monthly appointments to monitor your medication. This includes the measurement of pulse and blood pressure. Annual exams are also required.

Follow-up appointments

After the evaluation is completed and you are satisfied, you can schedule appointment with the psychiatrist. The appointment usually takes place through a video call using zoom but in certain circumstances it may be possible to do an audio only consultation (again at an extra cost).

We will then go over the options for treatment and then decide on an individualised, bespoke ADHD medication titration. This will include a discussion and review of your medication dosage and any side effects that you may be experiencing. The cost of these titration sessions is PS150 for face-to-face sessions and PS60 for online or telephone video consultations. The pharmacy will be charged for any medication costs.

The psychiatrist will ask questions regarding your family history, the impact of your ADHD symptoms on your life and any mental health issues that you may be experiencing. ADHD can be a hereditary condition, so it's important to examine your family history in order to determine if you are at a greater chance of developing this condition.

During this assessment it is essential that you are truthful and honest with the clinician in the sense that they will be using the information you provide to determine whether you have the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. This is a crucial step in the process, as failing to do so could result in an inaccurate diagnosis, and thus an incorrect prescribing of medication.

If you have decided that you would like to be treated for your ADHD We will schedule a follow-up appointment with one of our psychiatrists who specialise in this area. If you'd like to start treatment right away you can start treatment immediately following the diagnosis. You can also wait two weeks to think about the implications of the diagnosis and the options available to you.

If you're not sure which one you prefer, we suggest that you talk with your GP prior to booking your private examination as some providers have different policies about whether they require a GP referral letter or not. We also recommend that you check whether your GP accepts a "Shared-Care Agreement that means that once you are discharged from the clinic, you will be returned to them for the prescription for medication.

Medication

Medication is a key part of the journey for many people seeking an official ADHD diagnosis. It isn't easy to obtain prescriptions from psychiatrists on the NHS. NHS waiting lists are notoriously long and GPs are often reluctant to refer patients on to specialist services.

One method to circumvent this is to ask your GP to refer you through Right to Choose (see psychiatry-uk and ADHD 360). You can select a provider that provides an assessment on your own and titration. This will help you reduce time and be more convenient, especially if you have a busy schedule.

Once you have been identified as a candidate for this treatment your chosen doctor will examine you and decide whether or not you're required to be titrated on medication. You will be asked to fill out forms that differ by doctor but the most important ones are self-report questionnaires as well as medical histories from childhood and adulthood. These forms will assist your doctor determine any issues that could mean you shouldn't take ADHD medications if they're prescribed.

If you are being titrated the medication will consist of a mixture of stimulants and nonstimulant medications. These will be thoroughly tested and monitored to find the most suitable combination for you. The titration can be long and may require several extra appointments before you are stable.
