Smart mapping is a different feature that allows it to identify areas in your home that require attention, and then creates a cleaning path to get around them. This technology is very efficient at navigating around toys that are left on the floor, or furniture legs sticking out underneath objects. It also comes with a sensor that can snap Roomba to its real-world location if it begins to wander away from its original position.

iRobot has also added a set of rollers underneath the Roomba that do not have bristles and therefore are more likely to withstand knots than earlier models. These rollers are also taller and can fit under low couches or beds. They're designed to make the model more movable on various floor types.

The Roomba 980 differs from other models with a high-end price tag by its brand new dirt detection feature, which uses a camera in order to identify dirt that has been embedded. This is a nice improvement over the previous version, which relied on a sensor-driven pseudorandom coverage technique to bounce around the room and clean everything at least three times from different angles.

In our tests of its performance in our tests of its performance, the Roomba 980 did well on carpets and hard flooring. It scored very well on low-pile carpet and also on mid-pile. The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and start up and running immediately. After removing the pull tab for the battery and yellow bin insert from its undercarriage, all you need to do is plug it into its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, hit its large "Clean" button, and let it go to work. It will return to its dock when its battery is out or is full of debris. It also has indicators on the top for when its bin is full, it requires recharging or if its Wi-Fi signal has gone out.
