How to Replace Window Panes

A damaged window pane could cause a lot of trouble. It can also be an opportunity to upgrade your glass to energy efficient or insulated windows, and benefit from more comfort, higher potential for resales, and less bills.

It's a task you can take on yourself for a fraction of the cost of hiring an expert. It requires the right tools and an hour or two of your time.

Replace your single-paned windows using tempered or insulation glass to improve energy efficiency, cut down on noise, and maintain the original character of your old home. Repeat this process in intervals of 10 inches around the frame.

Putty

A baseball thrown at you or a rock that is errant or a falling branch can cause a window to crack or break. The majority of windows can be replaced easily by simply putting in a fresh piece. The glass is held in place using small clips made of metal called a glazier's point and putty, also called glazing compound. Before you install a new pane, first remove the old one and clean the area using a rag and a pull-type paint scraper or the wood chisel. Wear gloves and safety glasses while working. If the window is attached to the frame, you'll need use a heat gun to soften the adhesive before taking it off.

If you are planning to replace the original sash in the future, take care to remove any pieces of molding that secure the old pane. Sand the sash until it is flat and ready for new caulk. After the sash has been reinstalled then, you can apply a silicone caulk on the glass. This will ensure that it doesn't get soiled or discolor over time.

Remove the glazing points in the rabbets. These are the grooves in the sash, which is where the glass is. If they're difficult to cut out, you can try holding the hand tool, such as a heat gun to soften them up first. When using a heating tool, be careful to not damage the sash or its railings.
