Window Sash Repairs

Once the access panel is removed, you can begin working on the sash. Make the small parting beads (also called "tie rails") out of their grooves with a chisel or flat bar. These are often wedged in or nailed in, but they can be snipped out, so it's worth taking your time here. If the sash is still in place, break the mortise and tenon joints using a hammer and pin punch or screwdriver, then unhook the wood pegs attached to each component. It should now be possible to move the sash back and forth without difficulty, though it might require oiling if it seems stiff.

With the sash open With the sash in an open position, measure the sash chain or cord to reach from the pulley in the top of the jamb to the sash slot in the bottom. Cut the cord or chain and secure it as in Step 6 above. You can use a hammer, nails or screws. However nails are less likely than screws to cause damage.

It's best to leave the original weights in place unless you have purchased a kit to replace the counterbalance that was previously installed. They're not costly and easy to install if you buy them from architectural salvage stores.
