Speedy wideouts are the biggest beneficiaries of moving into the slot, since they have a much easier time getting open in the field when their route isn't covered by a linebacker or cornerback. Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who's not a speedy wideout but would benefit from more slot time. He's a solid player for intermediate and short routes.

The bottom of the list features more possession-based receivers that are more effective on short and intermediate routes than in deep areas such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is a good sleeper pick this year since he'll be the primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are largely expected to be involved on more downfield targets. Hamler will thrive on more short-to-middle and intermediate routes, because that's where he excelled while playing for the Bills in 2021. He could be a great replacement for the departed wideout Jordan Matthews in Buffalo.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The proportion of snaps a receiver takes in the slot is a good indicator of their ability to play deep routes. However, it's not always a reliable indicator of a receiver's abilities since certain receivers excel in the slot but cannot play deep, and vice versa.

For instance, the Eagles Alshon Jeffery leads the league in targets per game (4.8) but is only ranked sixth in slot receiving score (58.5). This is due to the fact that the majority of his targets have come from the outside and it is difficult to get a first down on a wide-open deep route in this setting.

Some receivers are better at playing inside, whereas others struggle to do so on the outside. Robby Anderson, for example, was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He ran 74% of his routes in the slot, as opposed to only 26% on boundaries routes. That's a huge difference, and shows how much more productive Robby Anderson is when he's aligned in the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, lines up inside the majority of his passing downs. He is among the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). He also played 51% of his perimeter routes and is a master in one-on-1 coverage.

Speed receivers tend to be more efficient when they align inside. They can be targeted further down the field, and are often swarmed by one-on-1 coverage. There are names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, and Julio Jones in our top five.

On the other hand, we've got some great slot cornerbacks like McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able to create pressures in the passing game and have McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles, and Moore being the most effective tackle stop efficiency on this list (-3.5). Through using McDuffie in the slot when they're running nickel or dime-type packages, and then placing him on the outside of base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his skills. Moore's ability to stop big run plays is an enormous asset when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's important to note that their slot counterparts are also good. Wide receivers with high roller slots slot grades have touchdowns that are about the same as those on the perimeter. This is mostly because quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to slot and outside receivers compared to other inside options such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

It's interesting to see a receiver such as CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of the sets. In fact Lamb is running a greater number of slot routes than the majority of players on this list. This is an excellent opportunity to create matchup benefits for your team and helps clarify why Lamb is rated as the top-rated slot receiver in our system this season.

Of course, he also plays the X position and makes huge plays from the perimeter as well. Lamb isn't as powerful as the other players in this list, however he's still an elite wide receiver that fits well into the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is yet another example of a player capable of putting up huge numbers on both types of targets. He has a very high slot receiving grade and is one of the best players in the league at catching back-shoulder throws, however, he's also a formidable player for contested-catch.

Another player on this list that's a slot specialist in the true sense is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton who has been positioned in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps this season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA for cornerbacks that are aligned in the slot, which makes him an important part of his team's defense. He's had a difficult time stopping passes from the outside, and his EPA against this type of target is negative. This is the result of playing with subpar linebackers and safeties that can't match up with Hilton's size, speed and route-running ability.
