Slot Rankings - How Wide Receivers Score More Touchdowns in the Slot

The bottom half of the list was populated with more possession-based receivers including Chris Godwin and Diontae Johnson. The Bucs are likely to shift the latter two players into the slot more often this season, which will increase their targets. However, they'll have to improve their scoring from the perimeter to keep their high standards.

The slot is the ideal option for wideouts that are fast, as they are able to open more quickly when their route will not be covered by a linebacker or cornerback. Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who's not a speedy wideout, but could benefit from more slot time. He's a reliable target for intermediate and short routes.

The bottom of the list is populated by possession-based receivers that are more effective on intermediate and short routes than those in deep areas, such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy will be the Rams main slot receiver this season, is a sleeper pick. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are expected to play a greater role in downfield targets. Hamler is likely to be a star on short-to-mid routes, as that's what he excelled at in 2021 while playing for the Bills. Hamler could be a fantastic replacement for the departing wideout Jordan Matthews in Buffalo.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The percentage of snaps that a receiver makes in the slot is an excellent indicator of their ability to run deep routes. It's not always an accurate reflection of a receiver’s skill set because certain receivers excel in the slot but don't play more deep.

Alshon Jeffrey, for example is the league leader in goals per game (4.8) However, he's only 6th in the position that scores (58.5). This is due to the fact that the majority of his targets come from the outside, and it's difficult to score a first-down on a wide-open deep route in this setting.

On the other hand, certain receivers excel inside and can't do much on the outer. Robby Anderson, for instance, was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He ran 74% of his route in the slot, as opposed to just 26% on boundary routes. This is a significant difference and shows how much more productive Robby Anderson is when he's aligned in the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, lines up inside most of the time on his passing downs and has one of the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). However he also ran 51 percent of his perimeter routes last season, and is a star in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are typically more effective when lined up inside, as they are able to get targeted down the field and frequently have one-on-one coverage. That's why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans, and Amari Cooper in the top five of our list.

On the flip side, we've got some great slot cornerbacks like McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able to generate pressures in the passing game, with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles, and Moore having the highest tackle stop efficiency on this list (-3.5). Spagnuolo made McDuffie's abilities more effective by placing his slot for nickel and dime packs and then shifting him to the outside while playing base defense. Moore's ability to stop big run plays is a major asset when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While top NFL receivers like Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald, and Baldwin excel on the perimeter, their slot counterparts are also equally good. Wide receivers with high slot grades score touchdowns about the same as those on the outside. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks are more consistent with their target distribution when they throw to outside and slot wide receivers rather than other inside options such as tight ends and backfield passers.

It's interesting to see a receiver like CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in 3 WR sets, and flanker in 2 of the sets. Lamb is running more routes in the slot than most of the players on this chart. This is an excellent method to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb is the top-rated receiver in our system.

Of course, he also plays the X position and makes huge plays from the perimeter as well. Lamb isn't nearly as explosive as the other players in this ranking, but he's still a very high-graded receiver and is a great player for the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is yet another example of a player who's capable of posting big numbers on both targets. He has a very high slot receiving grade and is among the best players in the league at catching back-shoulder throws, but he's also a great contested-catch threat.

Another player on this list that's a true slot specialist is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton, who has lined up in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps this season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA for cornerbacks that are aligned in the slot, making him a crucial part of his team's defense. On the other hand, he's struggled to block passes from the outside and has given a negative EPA against these kinds of targets. This is because he's playing with linebackers and safety who cannot compete with Hilton's speed, size, and ability to run routes.
