Buying a Pram Newborn

Parents and caregivers can rely on prams and pushchairs car seats to be versatile and multi-functional. They are the co-pilots of your child's journey.

A pram newborn is designed for infants and newborns. It comes with a the most solid, sturdy carrycot with soft and secure walls.

A pram comes with a bassinet. However, it can be converted to a stroller when the baby is ready.

Safety

Newborns are incredibly fragile and must be kept as safe as you can. A pram or stroller equipped with safety features will keep your baby in a safe and comfortable environment during travel. A pram or stroller must include a break that is working and a 5-point harness (2 shoulder straps; 2 waist straps; and a crotch belt) and a wrist tether for the person driving it. Check that the pram you choose meets these standards.

Find a pram which allows your baby to ride in the recommended position of lying flat. This position is supportive for your baby and prevents the development of a risky spinal curve that can lead to problems with their spine. By keeping the airways open, it decreases the risk for SUID (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or Asphyxiation). Most prams are able to be used right from the time of birth. They have a seat unit which reclines to lay flat for infants, and can be converted into a pushchair unit for older children.

The suspension of the pram will determine how smooth it runs. A pram that has many suspensions is likely to be more costly but it might be worth paying for this feature if you are planning to use your pram daily for a few years or more.

Always read the instructions and read the warning labels on your stroller or pram. Also, ensure that your stroller is parked in a safe spot free of bicycles, traffic or any other potential hazards when it is not being used. It is also a good idea to take any bags or other items from the handles since they could cause your baby to be trapped or even suffocate.

Even if your baby is asleep, it's not a good idea to leave a pram or stroller unattended. They could wiggle and get trapped, or the pram may be thrown away and the child could be injured. Hanging bags or other items from the handles is not an ideal idea as they can fall and strike your child on the head.

Comfort

Having the option of lie flat seating is an absolute essential for infants since it aids in better back and lung development. Many prams have cocoons or carrycots that creates a warm nest-like space for your newborn and can be easily detached from the frame. Find a pram that has two shoulder straps (ideally padded) and a five-point safety harness that fits your bub's body safely. It's also worth considering whether you'd prefer a pram with a parent-facing feature or not - it's perfect for keeping an eye on your child, and also helps them feel secure by the familiarity of their parents.

Finally, make sure your pram newborn has a solid base and wheels that are able to handle potholes and bumps. Ensure that you are able to fold it up easily, and check that the safety harness is functional, fits comfortably and securely (five-point rather than three-point) and can be adjusted as your child grows. You should also be able to store shopping and changing bags in the basket underneath (although remember that loading the pram with too much weight could cause it to tip over).
