Slot Rankings - How Wide Receivers Score More Touchdowns in the Slot

Slots work exactly the same way every spin, so you won't find any secret hacks to beat them. There are a few tricks you can follow to increase your chances of winning.

First, you should check a game's RTP. This statistic will tell you how much players can expect to win on average over the long run.

Slot Efficiency

The goal of slot efficiency is to maximize the number of slot changes that can be made without violating the constraints of a set of pre-defined rules. These constraints can include, for instance the minimum operational delay (usually expressed as scheduling delays), fairness, equity access, competition, environmental goals and more. The bottom of the list was filled with more possession-based receivers including Chris Godwin and Diontae Johnson. The Bucs are likely to shift the latter two players into the slot more often during this season, which will increase their targets. However, they'll have to improve their scoring from the perimeter to keep their high standards.

The slot is the best option for wide receivers who are fast, as they can get open more quickly when their route will not be covered by a linebacker or cornerback. The only non-speedy wide receiver on the list that benefits from more slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable player on intermediate and short routes.

The bottom of the list is populated by possession-based receivers who are better on short and intermediate routes than those in deep areas like Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is a good choice for a sleeper this year since he'll be the primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are likely to play on more downfield targets. Hamler will excel on shorter-to-mid and intermediate routes, because this is where he was at his best when playing for the Bills in 2021. He could be an excellent replacement for the departed wideout Jordan Matthews.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The percentage of snaps a receiver plays in the slot is an excellent indicator of their ability to play deep routes. However, it isn't always a reliable indicator of a receiver's skills as some receivers excel in the slot, but cannot play deep, and vice versa.

Alshon Jeffrey, for instance is the league leader in goals per game (4.8), but is only ranked 6th in the slot that receives scores (58.5). This is due to the fact that most of his targets are from outside, and it's a challenge to make a first down on an open, deep route.

Some receivers are better at playing inside, while others struggle on the outside. For example, the Panthers gave Robby Anderson 978 snaps this season, and he completed 74% of his slot routes as opposed to only 26% on boundary routes. This is a significant difference that shows how much more efficient Robby Anderson is when aligned to the slot.

Moreover, the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines in the middle on the majority of his passing downs, and has a top five slot receiving score (58.5). However, he also played 51 percent of his perimeter routes last season, and is a star in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are more effective when lining up inside, since they are able to be targeted down the field and frequently are in one-on-one coverage. This is why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans and Amari Cooper in the top five of our list.

On the other hand, we've got some great slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. McDuffie is the top player in the NFL in forced fumbles, with seven, while Moore is the most effective tackle-stop performance (-3.5) on this list. Spagnuolo made McDuffie's abilities more effective by placing his slot for nickel and dime packages, and then moving him to the outside while playing base defense. Moore's ability in stopping big run plays is a huge benefit when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers like Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's important to note that their slot counterparts are just as excellent. As a whole, wide receivers with a high slot receiving grade score touchdowns roughly at the same rate as players who play on the outside. This is mainly because quarterbacks are more consistent with their target distribution when they throw to slot and outside wide receivers rather than other inside options such as backfield passers and tight ends.

It's therefore fascinating to see a player like CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of them. In fact, he's running a higher number of routes in the slot than the majority of players on this list. This is a great way to create matchup benefits for your team and to explain why Lamb is the highest-rated slot receiver in our system this season.

He also plays the X-position and makes huge plays from outside. Lamb isn't as powerful as some of the other players in this ranking but he is still an elite wide receiver that is well-suited to the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman, a player who is able to put huge numbers with both types of targets, is a further example. He's among the top players in the league when it comes to throwing throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a superb player who can play contested catch.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is a slot software specialist. He's been positioned in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps to date. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA among cornerbacks who are aligned in the slot, making him a valuable part of his team's defense. On the other hand, he's struggled to prevent passes from the outside and has been able to give a negative EPA against these types of targets. This has been a result of playing with unsafe linebackers who can't match up with Hilton's size, speed and route-running ability.
