Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who isn't a speedy wideout, but could benefit from more slot time. He's a solid target for short and intermediate routes.

The bottom of the list features more possession-based receivers who are better on short and intermediate routes than deep ones, such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy, who will be the Rams principal slot receiver this season is a sleeper selection. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are likely to play a bigger role in downfield targets. Hamler, meanwhile, should excel on shorter-to-mid and intermediate routes, as it was where he excelled when playing for the Bills in 2021. He could be a great replacement for departed wideout Jordan Matthews in Buffalo.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The proportion of snaps a receiver takes in the slot could be a good indicator of their ability to run deep routes. However, it's not always a true representation of a receiver's abilities since some receivers excel in the slot, but aren't able to play deep and vice versa.

Alshon Jeffrey, as an example is the league leader in targets received per game (4.8) However, he's only 6th in the position that scores (58.5). This is because most of his targets have come from the outside, and it's hard to get a first down on a wide-open, deep route in that situation.

On the other hand, certain receivers excel inside and aren't able to do much on the perimeter. Robby Anderson, for instance, was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He logged 74% of his routes in the slot, as opposed to just 26% on boundary routes. This is a significant distinction and demonstrates how much more productive Robby Anderson is when aligned to the slot.

Furthermore, the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines inside on the majority of his passing downs and has a top-five slot receiving score (58.5). However he also played 51% of his perimeter routes in the last season and is a stud in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are more effective when lining up inside, because they are able to get targeted down the field, and often have one-on-one coverage. This is why you'll find names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans, and Amari Cooper in the top five of our list.

On the flip side we have some outstanding slot cornerbacks like McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able create pressures in the passing game and have McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles, and Moore being the most effective tackle stop performance on this list (-3.5). Spagnuolo increased McDuffie's capabilities by using his slot for nickel and dime packages, and then moving him to the outside while playing base defense. Moore's ability to stop big run plays is an enormous advantage when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top developer slots receivers such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also important to note that their slot counterparts are equally good. As a whole wide receivers who have a high slot receiver grade score touchdowns roughly at the same rate as players who play on the edge. This is mostly because quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to slot and outside receivers than to other inside options, such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

It's therefore interesting to see a player such as CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in 3 WR sets, and flanker in 2 of them. In actuality Lamb is running a greater number of routes in the slot than most players listed on this chart. This is a great way to create matchup benefits for your team and clarify why Lamb is the highest-rated slot receiver in our system this season.

Of course, he also plays the X position and makes big plays from the perimeter, too. Lamb isn't as powerful as the players in this list, but he's still highly skilled and is a great fit for the Cowboys' scheme.

Mecole Hardman is a further example of a player capable of putting up huge numbers on both targets. He has a high slot receiver rating and is among the league's top players at catching back-shoulder throws but he's also a great opponent for contested catch.

Another player on this list who's an authentic slot specialist is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton who has played in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps this season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-highest EPA for run stops among cornerbacks who play in the slot. This makes him a key player in the defensive team. He has struggled to stop passes from the outside, and his EPA against this kind of target is negative. This is a result of playing alongside subpar linebackers and safeties that don't have the same size, speed and route-running ability.
