The slot is the best option for wideouts who are quick, as they can open up more quickly when their route will not be covered by a cornerback or linebacker. Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who isn't a fast wideout but would benefit from more slot time. He's a solid target for short and intermediate routes.

The last spot on the list is populated by possession-based receivers that are more effective on intermediate and short routes than those in deep areas such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is expected to be the Rams' primary slot receiver this year is a sleeper selection. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are expected to play a greater role in downfield targets. Hamler should be able to perform well on short-to-mid routes, as that's what he excelled at in 2021 while playing for the Bills. Hamler could be a great replacement for the former wideout Jordan Matthews.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The amount of snaps a receiver makes in the slot could be a good indicator of their ability to run routes deep. However, it's not always a true representation of a receiver's skills as certain receivers excel in the slot, but can't play deep and vice versa.

Alshon Jeffrey, as an example, leads the league in goals per game (4.8) however, he is only 6th in slot receiving scores (58.5). This is because the majority of his targets come from outside, and it's a challenge to make a first down on a wide-open, deep and wide-open route.

Certain receivers are better playing inside, while others struggle on the outside. Robby Anderson, for example was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He logged 74% of his route in the slot, as opposed to only 26% of his boundary routes. This is a huge distinction and demonstrates how much more efficient Robby Anderson is when he is aligned to the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, is in the middle of the field most of the time on his passes and is among the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). He also ran 51% of his perimeter routes and is a master in one-on-1 coverage.

Speed receivers are usually more effective when lined up inside, because they can get targeted way down the field and frequently are in one-on-one coverage. There are names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, and Julio Jones in our top five.

McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks also belong to this group. Both have been able to create pressures in the passing game with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles, and Moore having the highest tackle stop rate on this list (-3.5). Spagnuolo maximized McDuffie's skills by putting him in the slot for nickel and dime packs and then moving him to the outside while playing base defense. In addition, Moore's ability to stop big run plays has been a huge benefit when playing in the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers like Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also worth noting that their slot counterparts are also excellent. Wide receivers with high slot grades score touchdowns about the same as those on the perimeter. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to slot and outside receivers than to other inside options such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

It's therefore fascinating to see a player like CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in three WR sets, and flanker in 2 of the sets. Lamb is running more routes in the slot than many of the players on this list. This is an excellent way to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb is the top-rated receiver in our system.

Of course, he also plays the X position and makes big plays on the perimeter, too. Lamb isn't as fast as the other players on this list however he's still a high-graded wide receiver who fits well into the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is yet another example of a player capable of putting up huge numbers on both targets. He has a high slot receiving grade and is one of the league's best at catching back-shoulder throws but he's also a great player for contested-catch.

Another player on this list that's a true slot specialist is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton, who has lined up in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays this season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA among cornerbacks who are aligned in the slot, making him a valuable part of his team's defense. He has struggled to stop passes from outside, and his EPA against this type of target is negative. This is because he's been playing with linebackers and safety players who can't compete with Hilton's speed, size, and route-running abilities.
