Slot Rankings - How Wide Receivers Score More Touchdowns in the Slot

Slots are the same for every spin. There aren't any tricks to help you beat them. There are a few tricks that you can apply to increase your chances of winning.

Slot Efficiency

The aim of slot efficiency is to maximize the number of changes to the slot that can be made without breaking a predefined set of constraints. These constraints can include, for instance the minimum operational delay (usually expressed as scheduling delays) fairness, equity access, competition, environmental goals and many more. The process of distributing slots can be complex and optimizing it to achieve the desired performance metrics requires a careful examination of the factors involved.

Items with the highest velocity are given the most classic slots, while less popular items are placed further back in the warehouse.

Another key element of slot efficiency is the distance factor, which measures the amount of space that has to be allotted to support the pick-to-ship process. The measure takes into account the velocity of the items, as in addition to their placement on racking and handling characteristics of the equipment.

The bottom of the list was filled with more possession-based receivers, including Chris Godwin and Diontae Johnson. These two are likely to see an increase in their targets this season if the Bucs move them into the slot more frequently however, they'll have to increase their perimeter scoring to keep that high level.

The slot is a great option for wideouts that are fast, as they are able to open more easily when their route won't be covered by a linebacker or cornerback. Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who isn't a fast wideout but would benefit from more slot work. He's a reliable player for intermediate and short routes.

The last spot on the list is populated by possession-based receivers who are better on short and intermediate routes than deep ones like Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy, who will be the Rams principal slot receiver this year is a sleeper selection. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are expected to play a larger role in downfield targets. Hamler will excel on shorter-to-mid and intermediate routes, since that's where he excelled while playing for the Bills in 2021. Hamler could be a great replacement for the departing wideout Jordan Matthews in Buffalo.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The proportion of snaps that a receiver makes in the slot is a good indicator of their ability to run deep routes. However, it's not always a true representation of a receiver's skill set as some receivers excel in the slot, but aren't able to play deep and vice versa.

For example, the Eagles' Alshon Jeffery leads the league in targets per game (4.8) but is only ranked sixth in slot receiving score (58.5). This is due to the fact that most of his targets have been thrown from the outside and it's hard to get a first down on a wide-open deep route in that situation.

Some receivers are better playing inside, while others struggle on the outside. For instance, the Panthers handed Robby Anderson 978 snaps this season, and he ran an astounding 74% of his slot routes, compared to just 26% for boundary routes. That's a huge difference, and shows how much more productive Robby Anderson is when he's aligned in the slot.

Moreover it is worth noting that the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines up inside on most of his passing downs and has a top-five slot receiving score (58.5). However, he also played 51% of his perimeter routes in the last season and is a top performer in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are more effective when they are lined up inside. They can be targeted further down the field and are often faced with one-on-1 coverage. This is why you'll find names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans, and Amari Cooper in the top five on our list.

On the flip side we have some outstanding slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able generate pressures in the passing game and have McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles, and Moore being the most effective tackle stop performance on this list (-3.5). Spagnuolo made McDuffie's abilities more effective by placing him in the slot for nickel and dime packages, and then shifting him to the outside when playing base defense. Moore's ability to stop big run plays is a major asset when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's worth noting that their slot counterparts are also excellent. Wide receivers with high slot grades have touchdowns that are about the same as those on the outside. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks are more consistent with their targets when they throw to slot and outside wide receivers than other inside options like tight ends and backfield passers.

It's therefore fascinating to see a player such as CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of them. In fact Lamb is running a greater number of slot routes than most of the players listed on this list. This is a great method to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps to explain why Lamb is the top-rated receiver in our system.

He also plays at the X-position and makes big plays on the outside. Lamb isn't as explosive as some of the other players in this list, but he is still an elite wide receiver that is a good fit in the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is yet another example of a player capable of posting big numbers on both kinds of targets. He has a very high slot receiving grade and is among the league's top players at catching back-shoulder throws, however, he's also a formidable contested-catch threat.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is slot specialist. He's lined up in this position on 85.7 percent his defensive snaps thus far in the season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-best EPA for runs stopped among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him a valuable player in the defensive unit. On the other hand, he's struggled to block passes from the outside and has allowed the negative EPA against these types of targets. This has been a result of playing with subpar linebackers and safeties that don't have the same size and speed, as well as his route-running abilities.
