Center Paul Stastny announced his retirement after 17 seasons with five NHL teams.

Stastny, 37, wrapped up his career with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2022-23.

He told The Athletic on Tuesday that he informed the Hurricanes of his decision to retire earlier this fall.

"I haven't filed anything, but in early September we decided we were done. I didn't put anything out on social media or anything," Stastny said. "I kind of came into the league quietly, and I'm leaving the league quietly. That's the way I like it. All the people close to me know, and then word always gets out eventually."

Stastny collected 822 points (293 goals, 529 assists), 500 penalty minutes and a C Plus Oplichting-54 rating in 1,145 games. He participated in the 2011 NHL All-Star Game.

The Quebec native was a second-round pick by Colorado in 2005 and played for the Avalanche (2006-14), St. Louis Blues (2014-18), Winnipeg Jets (2018, 2020-22), Vegas Golden Knights (2018-20) and Hurricanes.

Stastny never won a Stanley Cup. In 11 trips to the postseason, he posted 73 points (30 goals, 43 assists) in 118 games.
