Slot Rankings - How Wide Receivers Score More Touchdowns in the Slot

The only wide receiver who isn't speedy on the list that benefits from more slot time is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable target on short and intermediate routes.

Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other possession-based receivers are at the low end of the list. They're better on shorter and intermediate routes than in deep areas. Jeudy is a great option to be a sleeper for this season, as the Rams' primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are likely to be involved on more downfield targets. Hamler is likely to be a star on intermediate and short-to middle routes, since that's the way he performed in 2021 when he played for the Bills. He could be a great replacement for the departing wideout Jordan Matthews in Buffalo.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The percentage of snaps a receiver plays in the slot is a good indicator of their ability to run deep routes. It is not always an accurate reflection of a receiver's abilities because certain receivers excel in the slot but don't play more deep.

Alshon Jeffrey, as an example, leads the league in the number of targets he receives per game (4.8) however, he is only ranked 6th in the position that scores (58.5). This is due to the fact that the majority of his targets come from outside and it's hard to get a first down when playing a wide-open, deep and wide-open route.

Some receivers are better playing inside, while others struggle to do so on the outside. Robby Anderson, for instance was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He logged 74% of his routes in the slot, compared to only 26% on boundary routes. This is a huge distinction and demonstrates how much more efficient Robby Anderson is when aligned to the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, plays in the middle of the field most of the time on his passing downs and is among the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). He also ran 51% of his perimeter routes and is a pro in one-on-1 coverage.

Speed receivers are more effective when they align inside. They are able to be targeted further down the field, and fun Slots are often swarmed by one-on-one coverage. There are names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper and Julio Jones in our top five.

On the flip side we have some outstanding slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able create pressures during the pass game and have McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles, and Moore having the best tackle stop efficiency on this list (-3.5). Spagnuolo increased McDuffie's capabilities by using his slot for nickel and dime packages and then moving him to the outside when playing base defense. Moore's ability in stopping big run plays is a huge benefit when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers like Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also important to note that their slot counterparts are also excellent. As a group wide receivers who have a high slot receiver grade score touchdowns at roughly the same rate as players who are on the edge. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks are more consistent with their target distribution when they throw to slot and outside wide receivers, as opposed to other inside options such as tight ends and backfield passers.

It's interesting to see a player such as CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in 3 WR sets, and flanker in 2 of them. Lamb is running more routes in the slot than most of the players on this chart. This is a great method to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb is the most highly-rated receiver in our system.

Of course, he also plays the X position and makes big plays on the perimeter, too. Lamb isn't as awe-inspiring as the players in this ranking but he's highly skilled and is an excellent player for the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is a further example of a player capable of posting big numbers on both targets. He has a high slot receiver grade and is among the best players in the league at catching back-shoulder throws but he's also an excellent contested-catch threat.

Another player on this list who's a slot specialist in the true sense is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton, who has lined up in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays this season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-highest EPA for run stops among cornerbacks who play in the slot. This makes him an important member of his team's defensive team. He's struggled to stop passes from the outside, and his EPA against this type of target is negative. This is due to him playing with linebackers and safety players who can't match Hilton's speed, size, and ability to run routes.
