And, like other premium iRobot models (including the top-rated model) they utilize intelligent mapping technology to create detailed floor plans and avoid home-based obstacles like cords and furniture legs. The robots also feature a feature called Carpet Boost which boosts its power when it senses dirt on the carpet.

The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored excellently in our tests on bare floors and are especially adept in cleaning dog hair. They do have some flaws however, which hinder them from being our top option. For one, the Q5's navigation system does not include AI-powered obstacle avoidance and is therefore prone to get caught up in socks and shoes and couldn't navigate tight spaces very efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of an area.

However, it's a good robot vacuum choice to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on an Roomba from iRobot, and you have a mostly bare-floor home or office. It's also very quiet and can be used when you're at work or school. The only thing it lacks that you won't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming of floors with no floor. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick very well and cannot handle dried-on debris. The Q5 is self-emptying cradle that can be emptied by itself. If you need to mop, the mopping pad can be changed for an awe-inspiring one in a matter of just a few seconds.

2. IRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive vacuuming and mopping capabilities into an elegant, compact package. Its quick navigation and smart cleaning maps make it quick to clean and effective at dealing with larger particles such as pet hair. It also features self-emptying dustbins with powerful suction and support for virtual boundaries. It's the most efficient robot hoover for carpets, though it lags behind some competitors in deep cleaning.

This high-performing mop and vacuum combination makes use of advanced sensors to dodge obstacles and pet waste and it learns the layout of your home over time for more efficient cleaning. You can change its cleaning schedule and set up zones through the well-designed app. Its battery life is average in comparison to other models.

When the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted area, you can tell it to remove and extend its mops. This can help avoid cross contamination. The flex arm is ideal to get under furniture with low levels and along baseboards. It doesn't offer the same washboard performance as our other Editors' Choice picks, the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo N8 Pro+ as well as the iRobot Combo j9+.

During tests, X30 Ultra was the quickest robot vacuum/mop that could complete the task of cleaning a whole home and had 66 percent of its battery remaining. It's a little more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, but it has superior suction, a built-in dust bin that automatically empties into its base, and it supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It is able to clean floors even after it vacuums. This is a feature we haven't seen on other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

The robot vacuum mop cleaner robot and mop combination is sleek and has a circular design that appears more like a regular Roomba model than the boxy models from the competition. It is one of our most attractive looking robot vacuum cleaner vacuums. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also among its most advanced. It comes with advanced features, like Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads autonomously).

It's also the sole robot vacuum/mop to score an absolute 10 out of 10 in our testing. This is thanks to the combination of modern sensors, including a restructured lighting system, a camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot vacuum reviews we tested that could refill and empty its basestation in a self-contained manner. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mops.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is easy to operate. It has an intuitive mobile app interface that is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that it's a noisy unit which could be problematic if you run it in the morning before work or in the evening as you try to fall asleep.

It's also quite expensive, but it's not as expensive as Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are equally capable and better-looking. If you're willing with a bit more noise and a little more cost, this is a very efficient two-in-one device that should please almost everyone.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with a variety of sophisticated features that will let you forget about your chores. Similar to Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that takes the care of mopping and vacuuming. It comes with a multifunction dock that automatically empty the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank and cleans and dry its mop pads.

The smart robot uses an array of LIDAR and structured light to map out the floor plan and detect obstacles, making it more efficient than its top rivals. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time hazards detection, though this wasn't foolproof in our tests and was sometimes confused with power cords or obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner comes with an maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to do the job. It also comes with an attribute known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts cleaning frequency for various areas of the house depending on how dirty the areas are.

For larger houses it's recommended to choose a model with zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean a specific area of your home by using the app or voice commands. A stair mode can be useful if you have a number of furniture. Additionally the recharge and resume function that lets your robot vacuum pick up right where it left off is ideal for busy families.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a smarter cleaner than you might imagine from its price. It does a stellar job vacuuming, removing 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with a single pad that uses an oscillating motion that cleans better than most of the other robot mop cleaners we've tried. It's also extremely self-sufficient, with a fully-featured app, and a self-emptying, washable base.

The iRobot app is designed to guide you through an exercise in mapping which collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no go" areas that you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, arrange an area for cleaning or to prioritise your dirtiest rooms for better performance. The app also provides access to a host of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.

It can also reach corners and under furniture better because its shape is more rectangular. It also has a powerful 8000 Pascal suction and combs with intelligent technology for pet hair. You can also create a spot-cleaner that thoroughly cleans an area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a more sleek more affordable alternative to iRobot Roomba. It is more appealing in its design, similar to Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are shaped like cute little eyes. It is capable of vacuuming, but is more prone to get caught on low thresholds and is a bit more noisy than the other top robot vacuums uk vacuums we've tested. It also has a less user-friendly app and a tiny base station that doesn't double as a bin for emptying.
