Evolution Korea

South Korea's democratic system is prone to populist tendencies. However, it is more stable than one would expect.

The country is looking for an entirely new model of development. A Confucian culture that stresses respect for ancestors as well as gendered family relations continues to influence the society. There are signs that a secularist culture is gaining ground.

Origins

In the prehistoric era the ancestors of the modern Koreans lived by hunting and gathering wild food. Around 10,000 years ago they began to cultivate millet and beans as well as other crops. Evolution in Korea

The Korean peninsula was habitable from Neolithic times onwards. Analysts and academics are divided on the extent to which Korea's growth is influenced by these two trends. This article examines the five phases of Korea's evolution in terms of its political development: democratically illiberal democracies (1945-60) democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877), democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and participatory democracy (2002). This article also identifies some significant factors that may be shaping these processes.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. The creationists have been successful in promoting their beliefs to this population. A survey conducted in 2009 revealed that almost one-third of respondents were against evolution. Of the respondents, 41% believed that there was no scientific evidence to support the theory 39% claimed that it did not align with their religious beliefs, and 17% said they did not understand it. This level of disbelief approaches that in the United States, where a similar number of people do not accept that humans evolved from earlier forms of life.

In the past, the anti-evolutionist campaign in Korea was primarily focused on educating students and in bringing Christ to them. In 1980, a four-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Giss of ICR were the featured speakers. The event attracted a large audience of scientists, professors, and church leaders.

The event's success led to the formation of the Korea Association of Creation Research on January 31 of 1980. The event was extensively covered in the national media, including The Korea Times, Chosun Ilbo and The Korea Times.

KACR began publishing a monthly newsletter called CREATION, where it published its activities and published articles on the scientific evidence supporting creationism. It also translated a number of films and slides from ICR and also several books on creationism that were in print outside of Korea. KACR members gave lectures across the country at universities and churches.

A KACR success was seen at the KAIST University in Seoul. Students at KAIST in Seoul were fascinated by creationism that they raised funds and received funding to build an enlightened museum on campus.

In addition to its activities, KACR has published a bimonthly magazine, CREATION. The magazine covers a variety of topics in the field of creation science. It also hosted a series of lectures by ICR staff. It has also established an organization of local branch offices that host seminars and talks to schoolchildren and other community groups.

Changes in South Korea

In the latter half of the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth century, Korea began to adopt a more Westernized lifestyle. The decline of Silla in the late 8th and early 9th centuries allowed powerful local factions to rise. Gungye was a noble from Later Baekje, established a kingdom with Songak as its capital. He also held control over a portion of the present-day Jeolla and Chungcheong provinces. Then, he moved the capital to Wansanju and became a rival to Goguryeo.

However his rule was not long-lasting. Wang Geon, a powerful local leader who defeated Gungye in 935 and united Goryeo, Baekje, and Silla and later joined Baekje into Goryeo without a fight as his successor. Additionally, Wang Geon introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened a centralized rule system. This marked the end to the Three Kingdoms Period. From then on, the Korean peninsula was ruled by the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms Period, Goguryeo Baekje Silla slowly grew into powerful states on the peninsula, and in Manchuria.
