Evolution Korea

Until recently the scientific community in Korea has avoided engaging with the creationists, fearing that it could give the movement more credibility. However, silence is no any longer an option.

The STR has been battling to get rid of textbooks that discuss evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. This is just one aspect of how the development paradigm has evolved.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a concept in science that explains changes in genetic traits over time. The theory is based on fact that living things adapt to their environment which can result in changes in genes, or even entire genomes. These changes could over generations lead to the creation of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is called natural selection, which explains the process by which those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more frequently than those with less favorable characteristics. In time, this disparity in reproduction could result in the creation of entirely new species.

The word "evolution" originates from the Latin for unrolling or revealing has been used in many different ways as the concept has evolved in both science and elsewhere. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species evolved into new species in a predetermined fashion. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist pupil who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833, attacked this idea and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the view that existing species change into new species in a gradual and predictable manner.

Recently evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living things develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or the ability to reproduce offspring. In time the genetic variability could result in the development of entirely new biological functions or physical traits in the population. This change in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and it is the main driver of evolutionary change. However other changes that are not genetic, such as the increase in the muscle mass as a result of diet or exercise cannot be considered to be examples of evolution since they are not inherited by the next generation.

Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and thousands of scientific tests Creationists have taken advantage of the notion that the theory is controversial and argue that it should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won some victories against evolution in textbooks for high school. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary history of humans and Archaeopteryx which is a feathered dinosaur believed to be the ancestral bird's first ancestor.

Why is Evolution Important?

Evolution explains the origins of Earth and all living species. It is also one of the pillars of biology, and helps scientists discover how living things operate and grow. Evolution also shows the connections between different species. Scientists study evolution in order to better comprehend nature and make important discoveries like new treatments.

The evidence for evolution of biological species is overwhelming. No other scientific theory can explain more about the universe and life on this planet. It has been thoroughly scrutinized and confirmed for a number of years. Many people, including some religious leaders, support the scientific theory of evolution. The majority of scientists believe in the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this support vary. Scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries for example, such as the development of treatments or developing new medicines, while others are driven by the desire to improve the lives of animals and plant species, generally to benefit humans. Some are simply curious, while others have a deep faith in God and want to understand how the universe works.

What is Creationism?

Creationists are those who believe that God created the universe and all that is in it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken seriously. Many creationists are Christians, but not all. Creationists typically fall into two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

What is Creationism?

The publishers of high school textbooks recently announced that they would remove references to evolution in their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) is the one who has led this drive. STR has achieved its first victory in removing instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx from textbooks. The next goal is to remove excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research as well as on human evolution.

STR claims to have the backing of 4,000 families and individual members. Its mission, it states is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which paints an image of students as being negative. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists in the United States. A survey of trainee biology teachers revealed that around half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely certain, but could be related to religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the US.

The KACR has accomplished a lot through its seminars and lectures. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and a book. One of them was a textbook on natural science with a cosmological perspective. This sparked an interest in college communities. In 1991 an academic and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught to this day.

On August 6-7 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR intends to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
