Evolution Korea

Until recently the scientific community in Korea has avoided engaging with creationists, afraid that doing so might give the movement more credibility. But silence is no longer an option.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a scientific one that explains the changes in the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The prevailing theory of evolution is called natural selection, which describes the process by which those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more often than those with less favorable characteristics. The word "evolution" originates from the Latin word meaning unrolling or revealing. However, the concept itself has a myriad of meanings as it has taken shape in the sciences and other fields. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species transformed into other species in a certain way. Over time this genetic variation can cause the emergence of completely new physical or biological functions in the same population. What is Creationism?

When people think of creationism typically think of the United States. However, South Korea is also the home of an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this effort. STR has won its first victory by eliminating instances of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx, from textbooks. The focus is now on removing snippets of Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution as well.

STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and individual members. Its goal, it says, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints a negative view for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of the newest biology teachers revealed that around half do not believe in evolution. The causes aren't clear but could be due to religion and the absence of full-time creation scientists across the country.

The KACR accomplished a number of things through its seminars and lectures in the past. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences that has an evolutionary perspective that sparked interest in college communities. In 1991 an academic and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university and it continues to be taught until today.

On August 6-7 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from outside the country, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to an audience of several thousand. KACR and its members have been delivering lectures on creation science at major seminaries too. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
