How to Replace Door Lock Door Locks

Door locks are the first line of defense against unauthorized access to your home. The locks may require replacement door lock due to wear and tear or other circumstances like moving into a new residence or a burglary.

To begin, you must determine your cylinder size by measuring the distance between the adjustment screw and the center of the cylinder knob. This measurement will enable you to purchase the appropriate lock.

Deadbolt

If you want to make sure your door is secure from intruders, it's a good idea to install deadbolts. The bolt extends into the strike plate on the doorframe when it is locked, making it much more difficult for a burglar to gain entry into the door. A single cylinder deadbolt can be activated with keys on the exterior side and a thumb turn part on the interior. Deadbolts can only function only if it is correctly installed.

First, you will need to determine if the door already has a hole to install a deadbolt or if it has to be bored. Mark the location of the hole to install the deadbolt on top of the door using the template that came with the lock installation set. Utilize your tape measure to determine the height of the deadbolt. Then, mark the high point on the outside of the door. You can then use the speed square to draw straight lines across the mark you made for the bolt hole.

Then using an electric drill, bore out the hole until it reaches the opposite side of the door. It could take a few minutes. Sand the hole and edge of the door to make it smooth. It's also recommended to stain or paint the door at this point.

Once the door is ready remove any screws visible on the existing deadbolt. This will reveal the back and front assemblies of the deadbolt and also the bolt that is inside. Remove the bolt and replace it by an alternative bolt that matches the door hardware. The bolt is often connected to a set plate that you have to remove. After that, you'll have to chisel the surface of the door frame to accommodate the strike plate.

If your strike plate is not in alignment, it could be because the previous installer failed to mortise it correctly or a weatherstripping has changed the strike's position. It is necessary to re-mortise the strikeplate and perhaps even the deadbolt to fix this issue. After this is done, test the deadbolt by closing it and locking it. Make sure that the bolt is extending into the strike plate and then test the key to make sure it closes and opens smoothly.

Knob

If a door knob wears out it could make your home or business less secure. It can also make opening and closing the door more difficult, so it is a good idea for you to replace the knob. It shouldn't take more than 30 minutes. Use pliers or a screwdriver to remove any knobs or handles. Be cautious not to scratch other components of the door.

The strike is equipped with an internal ramp which lifts the latchbolt as well as the keeper when it receives a signal from the reader. The retraction of the keeper and latchbolt causes them to rise on the ramp, which locks the door. When the door is shut the deadbolt remains in retracted and the latchbolt retracts into the keeper.
