Melding form with functionality, French-door refrigerators have elegant double doors that open to an expansive fridge on top and freezer drawer below. These refrigerators stand out due to their distinctive features, including door-to-door dispensers and more expensive Ice makers.

We contacted Ladina Schopf - an interior designer, architect, and founder of LS Projects - for her suggestions on how to pick the right one. We looked at the storage capacity, layout, and energy efficiency, among other factors.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

As the name suggests, GE's Profile series targets those who want to incorporate cutting-edge technologies into their kitchen. This refrigerator has it all including the Keurig K cup coffee maker on the door, to a clever dispenser of water. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. This refrigerator is costly and I was expecting better.

Apart from that minor flaw the fridge is a fantastic choice. It features a large freezer compartment that is not common for counter-depth french door fridge harvey norman-door refrigerators. It also holds plenty of frozen food compared to other models.

They're easy to open and close, although I found their textured plastic coatings to be a bit hard on the fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator includes all the features you'd expect from a refrigerator within this price range. It has Wi-Fi as well as app support and GE's SmartHQ Software. The app, which is available for iOS and Android devices, lets you control your fridge from anywhere in world, and it has numerous options for customization. It will also send notifications when the door is left unlocked, when the freezer or fridge requires defrosting, and when the filter has to be changed.

It would be nice if the GE PYE22PYNFS came with Precise Fill, an option available in a handful of other GE fridges that allows you to preset how many cups of water you'd like to pour out at a time. The fridge displays a countdown timer to display how much water remains however it's not as effective as Precise fill.

It is designed to look as a seamless element of your kitchen, Bosch's French-door refrigerator is an eye-catching piece. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also features a veggie compartment that keeps fruits and vegetables fresher for longer periods, and two compressors for preserving food items. The ice maker we tested is one of the most efficient and makes an ice pyramid with only a little water. This refrigerator is the ideal option for a single family or kitchenettes looking for a built-in look and top-of-the-line food preservation.

The fridge was rated the best refrigerator in our Refrigerators Test for various reasons. Its freezer temperatures held firm at just above 0 degrees Fahrenheit, and never fluctuating more than a fraction of a degree--this is key to avoiding freezer burn. The fridge section of the fridge also did well. It reached the initial temperature set within a matter of hours, and remained at the temperature throughout our tests.

Bosch has a reputation for high-end appliances, so it's no surprise that this counter-depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance with the option of connecting to your home Wi-Fi network and Bosch's Home Connect platform. This app allows you to monitor and manage your fridge remotely using your smartphone or tablet. The refrigerator is pricey however, it offers excellent features and functions at a reasonable cost.

It's important to understand the limitations of your fridge. It has a small shelf space, so you may have to think creatively when storing tall items. Also the shelves aren't completely sprillproof, and can easily be stained or damaged by sharp objects. It is easy to take out the trays in the fridge however, you must clean them regularly to prevent the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S counter-depth refrigerator is a great choice for those who need lots of space within a small frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. Inside, the fridge features the standard French-door layout, with gallon-sized bins for the doors on each door and two rows of shelves for spill-capture and a set of sleeker drawers. The top shelf on the right can be folded in order to create more space for tall items. You'll also find a full-width drawer for deli and an inside water dispenser.

One of the great things about this refrigerator is that the ice maker is inside the freezer, making it easy to transfer ice into the fridge to use as required. The freezer also has innovative design features like sliding drawers that can help you organize your items. It also has a huge bin that can hold plenty of frozen food items as well as an ice storage bin.

Another great feature of this refrigerator is its Smart InstaView panel. It lets you control the fridge's temperature and lighting via your smartphone. It's a good way to control and monitor your refrigerator, especially if you're away from home.

But while the Smart InstaView is a neat feature, it doesn't enhance the overall performance of the refrigerator. In fact, it took longer to defrost and chill food in this refrigerator as compared to other fridges we tested. This could be due to the bigger capacity.

The doors pose a problem with this refrigerator. They have handles that are sunken on the front that allow smaller people to pull them open from the bottom, however they're not easy for taller people to guide closed without slamming the doors. It would have been more effective to have front-mounted handles.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX fridge is an excellent choice for those looking to blend the look and feel of a French-door refrigerator with more efficient design. Its capacity is higher than average for counter-depth models and is able to cool evenly. It's also a bit less than the top counter-depth refrigerator with an ice maker, which helps make it a popular choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

If you're looking for a french fridge freezer with ice maker door fridge that doesn't cost you a fortune and isn't expensive, this Frigidaire is a solid option. It's a minimalist design that's not as visually striking like some of the competitors however it comes with enough features that make it a great option. Its most notable feature is the temperature adjustable drawer, helps to keep food like vegetables and meat fresher for longer. It also has a large water dispenser and a decent Ice machine that is fast.

Another nice feature is the "Chill Drawer" that sits above the two crisper bins. The drawer allows you to divert some of the refrigerator's cooling power directly into this area, so you can store foods that require special attention. You can alter the feature using the slider located on the in the middle of the drawer. You can also alter the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I have found that the general settings are more effective than the specific ones.

During my tests, I discovered that the temperatures of the refrigerator were fairly consistent in different parts of the fridge. The temperatures in the top and bottom of the fridge did not vary significantly from 38 degrees, and the middle of the fridge was within a degree of 36. This is a pretty good performance, but it doesn't quite rank among the best in our ratings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. This fridge can be connected with a smart thermostat to gain more precise information on the internal temperature of your fridge.

The Frigidaire FGHB2866PF's outside is made of grey-bodied stainless steel with a "smudge-proof" finish. It wards off streaks and fingerprints better than other stainless steel finishes I've tried.
