Evolution Korea

The democratic system in South Korea is vulnerable to populist impulses. However, it is more stable than one would expect.

The country is looking for a new way of developing. A Confucian culture that emphasizes respect for ancestors and gendered family relations continues influence society. There are signs that a secularist culture is gaining ground.

Origins

In the prehistoric era the ancestors of the modern Koreans were capable of survival through hunting and gathering wild food. Then around 10,000 years ago they began to cultivate crops like millet and beans. They also raised livestock, and made furs. These people formed tribal states in succession in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. They also created an industry for metalworking, which produced bronze tools, and later iron tools. They traded with other states and introduced celadon papermaking, block printing art styles, as well as writing to Japan.

In 2333 BCE Gojoseon was established on the southern part of the peninsula. The state adopted Chinese culture that included Confucian Philosophy and Buddhism. In this time, the inhabitants of Buyeo joined Gojoseon. Gojoseon was a hierarchical society with a monarch and senior officials were drawn from the landed aristocracy while the majority of the population was peasants. The state took taxes from these citizens, and sometimes forced them to serve in the army or build fortifications.

At the close of the period, the state of Baekje was founded by Onjo who was a prince of Goguryeo and the son of Jumong who was the founder of Goguryeo. The new kingdom grew into the southwest of the peninsula, and clashed against Goguryeo's commanderies and China's in the area. Baekje introduced elements of Confucian thinking into its state beliefs and made the male centered filiopiety idea an official doctrine in 1390 CE. Under the guise filiopiety, fathers were accountable to their families. They were expected to be obeyed by all and respected by their children and grandchildren.

After the Three Kingdoms, several smaller states emerged in the Proto-Three Kingdoms period, or Several States Period (yeolgugsidae). Of them, Baekje was the most powerful of them all however, its dynasty ended when Goguryeo was defeated in 676 CE, leaving Baekje with its southern territories of Manchuria and the western region around Hwanghae Bay, while eastern Buyeo and the Gaya confederacy prospered for a period of time.

The Unified Silla kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to cooperate in order to expand their territorial holdings. In the final, Silla, with significant Chinese assistance, defeated all other states and united the peninsula in 935 CE.

As Korea is entering a post-crisis period the way it develops appears to be in flux. Those who are appalled by the enormous cost of the old system would prefer a thorough program of liberalization in capital, labor, and product markets. On the other hand champions of the old system are seeking to preserve it by leveraging nationalist sentiments and exaggerating fears of job loss.

Policy and academic analysts are starkly divided as to the extent to which these two trends are driving Koreas evolution towards a new model of economic governance. This article assesses developments to date, by looking at five phases of Korea's political development including democratic illiberalism (1945-60), democratic authoritarianism (1961-72) and authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87) democratic paternalism (1987-2001), and democratic participation (2002 to present). This article also highlights the most important factors that are the driving force behind these developments.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26% of the population is Christian. Creationists have made progress in promoting their views to this group. A survey conducted in 2009 revealed that nearly a third of respondents did not believe in evolution. Of those who voted, 41% stated there was not enough scientific evidence to support the theory 39% of respondents said it contradicted their religious beliefs, and 17% said they did not know what it meant. This level of doubt is similar to that of the United States, where a similar percentage of people do not accept that humans evolved from less advanced types of life.

In the past, most of the anti-evolution movement in Korea was focused on educating college students and leading them to Christ. In 1980 an all-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Giss of ICR were the featured speakers. This event attracted a large number of professors, church leaders, and scientists.

The event's success resulted in the formation of the Korea Association of Creation Research on January 31, 1980. The inauguration meeting was widely covered in national newspapers, including The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo and also received wide attention.

KACR began publishing a newsletter titled CREATION. In it, 에볼루션 the organization reported on its own activities and published articles about scientific evidence for the existence of God. It also translated a number of films and slides from ICR and several books on creationism that were in print outside of Korea. KACR members delivered lectures in churches and universities throughout the country.

A KACR success was observed at KAIST University in Seoul. Students at KAIST in Seoul were keen on the concept of creationism that they raised funds and received funding to construct an enlightened museum on campus.

In addition to its public activities, KACR publishes a bimonthly news magazine called CREATION, which covers topics in creation science, 에볼루션 and it has sponsored a series of talks by ICR staff. It also has a network of local branches, which hold seminars and present talks to schoolchildren and other community groups.

Evolution in South Korea

In the latter half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The traditional Korean dress, the hanbok, was replaced with miniskirts, as well as other foreign fashion elements. In the same way, traditional Korean music styles were replaced by contemporary jazz and rock and roll. In this period the famous samulnori or masked dance-dramas, became popular with the general public. These dramatic pieces were performed to the beat of shaman drummers and other musical instruments.

The economic crisis has formed Korea's new development paradigm. The biggest challenge facing the new regime is to find an equilibrium between market-oriented and state-led policies. Baekje, founded by Onjo Prince and third son of Jumong of Goguryeo, was founded by people from the Hangang River area, Buyeo and other regions as well as migrant workers from northern China. Wang Geon, a powerful local leader who defeated Gungye in 935 and united Goryeo, Baekje, and Silla and later joined Baekje into Goryeo peacefully as a successor. Wang Geon also introduced fundamental reforms, and strengthened the central government system. This marked the end of the Three Kingdoms Period. The Korean peninsula was then under the control of the Goryeo Dynasty. In the Three Kingdoms Period, Goguryeo Baekje Silla slowly grew into powerful states on the peninsula, and in Manchuria.
