Evolution Korea

For a long time, the Korean scientific community resisted engaging with the creationists out of fear of giving the movement more credibility. But silence is no longer an option.

The STR has been fighting to remove evolution-related content from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestor bird. However, this is just one aspect of the development paradigm's evolution.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains changes in genetic traits over time. The theory is based on the fact that living creatures adapt to their environment, which may lead to variations in genes or even whole genomes. Over time, these changes can lead to the emergence new species. The predominant theory of evolution is natural selection, which explains the process that allows those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more often than those with disadvantages. This variation in reproduction could eventually lead to the creation and evolution of new species.

The word "evolution" originates from the Latin word for unrolling or revealing, but the concept itself has a myriad of meanings over the years as it has taken form in the fields of science and in other fields. Some early evolutionists, like Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather), believed that existing species evolved into new species in a certain way. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist student who coined the term "transmutation" to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.

Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process by which living organisms develop traits to increase their chances of survival or producing offspring. As time passes, genetic variation can cause a population to develop new physical characteristics or biological functions. Natural selection is the main force behind most evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, can't be considered evolution because they aren't passed down to future generations.

Creationists are using the argument that evolution is controversial, even though it has been proven to be valid by a multitude of scientific tests and that it has been tested over time. They argue that the theory shouldn't be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories against evolution in high school textbooks. This includes the removal of all references to the evolutionary roots of humans and Archaeopteryx which is a feathered dinosaur believed to be the ancestor of birds.

It has been rigorously scrutinized and confirmed for a number of years. Many people, and even religious leaders, are in favor of the scientific theory. It is crucial to keep in mind that evolutionary biology does not contradict religious beliefs because it only focuses on physical objects, events, and processes.

Many religious people have discovered a way to reconcile evolution with their convictions. Certain Christians, for example, believe that God created everything through evolution and that humans have a common ancestry to other animals.

The YECs are perhaps the most well known type of creationist and they believe that God created the universe exactly as described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of six days of creation is literal and that the universe as well as life on Earth were created just recently.

OECs are not as well-known However, they're just as committed to their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and life on Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is an untruth.

Both forms of creationism reject the notion that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origin of life on Earth. They claim that evolution isn't possible because it requires the creation of a miracle, and the founders of modern science eschewed miracles for fear that they would lose credibility.

Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution and also special creation, and refer to their belief as "theistic evolution." This is sometimes referred to as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the original species." In this theory, God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species that are similar to the original.

Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things during a single event, called the Great Flood. These creationists believe that the original species were created at the same time and that they developed slowly afterwards. They reject the idea of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating life cannot arise from nonliving matter.

In general, creationists are opposed to the teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations, such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education endorse this view as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, certain researchers and educational institutions are more flexible, and permit the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curriculum.

What is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their books. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an unofficial body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. STR has achieved its first victory by removing instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, the Archeopteryx from textbooks. The focus is now on the removal of excerpts from Darwin's infamous finch research and on human evolution too.

STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families and members. Its goal, it says is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints an unflattering image for students. It also aims to counteract the influence of American creationists in the United States. A survey of students in biology found that half did not believe in evolution. The reasons for this are not clear, but may include religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists in the country.

The KACR has achieved many things in the past through lectures and seminar events. One of them was a textbook on natural science that had a creationist perspective. This sparked an interest among college communities. In 1991, a professor along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today.

On August 6 and 7 the 7th of August 1993, which coincided with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to thousands of people. KACR and its members have been delivering lectures on creation science at major seminaries as well. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
