WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades provide a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of the item by +3. A random substat is also increased with every upgrade.

Upgraded gear is generally more valuable, unless it has a low requirement by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like Eth Titan weapons). Upgrades are less useful for those with lower requirements due to the need to roll a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of weapon or armor. The Best item upgrade used to upgrade item the item will be consumed and can't be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create enhancements.

You can upgrade your gear at any time by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader every few weeks, to keep your equipment up to date.

Upgrades will cost more, based on the item level, but they will always be cheaper than purchasing new gear. For example upgrading a chest piece from Benthic to ilvl 385 will cost 20 recycle points, while buying a similar Best item upgrader from another player will costs 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for tools, armor, weapon, and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased by players through NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for various currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any tool, weapon or armor. The button will display the item's next level of upgrade, when there are enough materials.

Upgrade costs differ based on the slot for the item Level upgrade and the current level of the item. For example weapons cost more than gloves, bracers, or bracers. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a few crests, with some upgrades having a discount to lower the cost of the Flightstones or the crests used. Once an item is upgraded to a certain degree, it can be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currency types.

Upgraders for items are available at many locations including the main island as well as some outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade discount as well as a chance to get a brand new upgrade recipe. The upgrade discount increases as more items are upgraded. It can be increased by having players complete certain achievements or quests.

Contrary to Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II, there is no item upgrader available in the beginning of Icewind Dale. Instead, the NPCs that are available to help with upgrades must be acquired through several methods that are both an improvement but also a drawback.

Crests

The simplest and easiest upgrade items is 15 crests. The most complicated upgrade requires up to 20 crests, contingent on the type of equipment that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests by finishing content at the appropriate level. This could be by doing outdoor activities, or by completing dungeons and raids in all difficulty levels to obtain equipment of lower tier or Mythicbosses of raids or dungeons with a heroic difficulty for gear in the endgame. These crests are then exchanged with an item upgrader like Cuzolth or Vaskarn, in Valdrakken for the appropriate upgrade steps and paths.

Using these new currencies isn't too complicated, but the system introduces some modifications to the upgrade process. For instance, once a piece of equipment reaches the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic), it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change lets players upgrade their equipment to the highest level possible on all of their characters, instead of relying on seasonal loot.

It's also important to use crests wisely, as they are only used for one purpose. For instance, it's a good idea to utilize all of your Whelpling rank crests on the top equipment available and then keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next round of upgrades you're planning to make. This is especially relevant for rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character which can only be eligible to take advantage of the account-wide discount if all of the slots are filled with high-quality gear.
