However, they have some flaws that prevent them from being our top pick. For instance, the Q5's navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance and is therefore prone to become entangled in socks and shoes and couldn't navigate tight spaces very efficiently in our tests. Also, it doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of an area.

It's still a good robot vacuum deal for those whose office or home has lots of unfinished floors and you're looking to save some money. It's also very quiet and can be used when you're at work or going to school. It's not equipped with the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming that is offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes that don't adhere well and isn't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 comes with a self-emptying cradle however. If you're required to, the mopping pad can be replaced with an awe-inspiring one in a matter of just a few seconds.

It can even clean the floor after vacuuming this feature, which we haven't seen in other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

With an elegant, circular design that looks more like a normal Roomba than the competition's boxy units, this mop and robot vacuum is one of the most attractive looking models in our evaluations. The latest model from iRobot is among the most intelligent, with advanced features including Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can autonomously wash mop pads).

It's also the only robotic vacuum/mop that scored a perfect 10 out of 10 in our evaluations. This is thanks to a combination high-tech sensors including a structured lighting system, a camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation on its own. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mops.

As with other iRobot models as well, the X40 is easy to use, offering an easy mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit as well as Google Assistant. The only real drawback is that it's a noisy unit, which can be problematic if you run it in the morning before work or in the evening as you attempt to sleep.

It also has a camera mounted on the front for real-time detection of hazards however, it wasn't 100% foolproof during our tests and was occasionally confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum has a suction capacity of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to get the job done. It also comes with "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the amount of time the vacuum works and alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the home according to the amount of dirt they tend to be.

If you have a bigger home, you should consider selecting a robot that comes with zones or spot cleaning modes. This lets you instruct the robot on which part of your house needs to be cleaned with the help of an app or voice command. If you have a lot of furniture, a stair mode is also useful. Also, a recharge and resume feature that lets your robot vacuum take over exactly where it left off is ideal for busy families.

iRobot RX3

It's also extremely self-sufficient, with a full-featured app and a self-emptying base that is washable.

The iRobot app is designed to help you navigate the mapping process, which gathers information on your floorplan and any "no go" areas that you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or to create an automatic hoover spot-clean. You can also use it to prioritize the most soiled areas for greater efficiency. The app comes with a variety of features, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.
