Door Handle Replacement

It's worth it to replace door handles if you aren't happy with the way they appear, or if they are difficult to use. Installing a new door handle is simple if you have patience.

Modern door handles are typically equipped with cover plates that conceal the screws, giving them a more attractive appearance. However, you will need to attach them separately if your new handle does not have them attached already.

Remove the Old Handle

Door handles aren't just an an important aesthetic addition to your home but they're also crucial for safety as they allow you to sash lock door handles and unlock your door. However, as time passes, your door handle may lose its grip, appear loose or start to look old and worn. This is a sign that it's probably time for a replacement.

If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it could be time to replace it. This is a serious issue because you won't be in a position to lock or unlock the door which could put your family and yourself at risk.

Another reason to replace your External Door handles handle is if it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle can be risky, particularly for elderly or children members who may struggle to open it. They could be trapped. Fortunately, it's fairly easy to fix a broken door handle by simply replacing the handle that was broken.

If you have a rectangular latch plate, replace it with a circular one. This will allow the latch to be able to hook into the strike plate and make the handle more convenient.

The first step is to take off the screw that holds the latch plate. These screws are often tight and will require some force to loosen. If you can, it might be helpful to have another person assist with this part.

Once the screws are removed and the latch plate should pull out of the door easily. If the latch plate is stuck or refuses to move, use a small file to scrape the edges. This can help loosen the plate.

Now you can prepare the new strike plate to be installed. Screw the latch plate into the door jamb using the screws that came with the new handles. Do not overtighten your screws because this could cause damage to the strike plate.

If you are not sure whether the latch plate is in its correct position, close and open the door to see whether it locks and closes correctly. If it doesn't, you will need to adjust the strikeplate upwards or down or forward or back until the door closes properly.

If the door is still jiggling or moving, it may be necessary to expand the hole for latching in the strike plate. This is more frequent on older doors. It could be caused by wear and tear hinges that aren't shallow, the wrong size latch, or damaged strike plate. If this is the situation, follow the same procedure as adjusting the strike plate, using a metal file instead of an hammer and chisel.

Take off the Latch

The latch is an angled metal piece that slides into and out of a hole in the inside of your upvc door handle replacement. When you turn the handle, it pushes the latch forward and allows you to open the door. It also connects to a hole in the frame of the door to keep the door shut. If your door shakes when you close it, changing the latch might be the only thing needed to correct the issue.
