Door Handle Replacement

It's worth replacing door handles if you aren't happy with the way they appear, or if they're difficult to use. Installing the new handle on your door is simple if you have patience.

Modern door handles are often equipped with cover plates that hide the screws, giving them an attractive appearance. However, you'll need to attach them separately if your new handle doesn't have them attached already.

Remove the handle that was previously used

The first step is to take off the screw that is holding the latch plate. The screws are often quite tight and require a lot of force to loosen them. It is helpful to get a second person to assist with this part if possible.

After the screws have been removed, the latch plate will slide out of the door with ease. If it is stuck or doesn't move, use a small nail file to scrape the edges of the latch plate. This can help loosen the plate.

Removal of the Latch

The latch is an angled metal piece that slides in and out of a hole on the inside of your door. The latch is pushed forward when you turn the handle. It also connects to a hole in the door frame to keep the door shut. If your door shakes when you close it, changing the latch may be all that's needed to fix it.

The screws that support the door latch are difficult to see, but you can usually insert a screwdriver into a small hole on the trim plate, and then pull the latch off. You may need to repeat this several times before the latch comes loose enough to let it out.

You should be able slide the new latch into its slot without issues once you have removed the old one. Make use of the new screws to secure the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it is correctly placed in the slot, and aligned with the screw chambers.

Take note of the backset (the distance between the centre of the large hole in the door's front and the edge) prior to installing the new handle. Verify that the size of the latch of the new handle is equal to the measurement.

If you are replacing the latch or handle or handle, or if the old lock cylinder is damaged then you'll need a new one. Removing the Cover Plate
