The Best Robot Hoover

The best robot vacuum will clean and vacuum your floors with no effort. It will also leave them spotless. Its affordable price and high-end functions (such as dirt detector) are positives.

Make sure you regularly inspect your robot's brushes for tangled hair and large debris, and wash them when required. Some models also self-empty their dust bin on board into a larger bin in the base, which reduces the amount of fine dust released into the air.

1. Roomba Q5 pro

The Q5 Pro and its sibling, the pricier Q7 Max Series, are among the most powerful robot mop vacuums we've examined. They feature motors that are top of the class and can handle up to 5,500 Pascals. Like other iRobots with premium features (including the top model), they use smart mapping to create detailed floor plans and eliminate household obstacles like cords and furniture legs. The robots also feature a feature called Carpet Boost that increases its power when it detects dirt on the carpet.

Both the Q5 and the Q7 Max Series get very good scores in our tests on floors that are bare, and they're particularly adept in cleaning pet hair. However, they do have a few flaws that keep them from being our top choice. One of the Q5's shortcomings is its navigation system doesn't include AI-powered obstacle avoidance. It's therefore prone to get stuck on shoes and socks and couldn't navigate densely packed rooms very well during our tests. Also, it doesn't have an image sensor that lets it see the corners of an area.

It's still a great deal for those whose home or office has a lot of bare floors and you're looking to save money. It's also extremely quiet and works while you're at work or in school. The only thing it doesn't have that you don't get in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. It's also less effective at mopping, as it relies on disposable wet wipes that don't hold on well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 comes with a self-emptying cradle however. And, if you need to, you can swap the mopping pad for dry ones in a matter of seconds.

2. IRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming capabilities into a sleek, compact package. Its quick navigation and smart cleaning maps make it easy to clean and effective at dealing with larger particles such as pet hair. It also has a self-emptying bin with powerful suction and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best robot vacuum for carpets, though it isn't as efficient as some of its competitors in deep cleaning.

This high-performing mop and vacuum combination makes use of advanced sensors to stay clear of obstacles and pet waste and it learns the layout of your home over time to provide more efficient cleaning. The app lets you set up zones and modify the cleaning schedule. It comes with a battery life that is comparable to other models.

You can tell the X30 Ultra to remove its mops and to extend them when in a carpeted area, which helps prevent cross-contamination. Its flex arm is also great to get under furniture with low levels and along baseboards. It's not as efficient on the washboard as our other Editors' Choice Picks, the Ecovacs Ozmo N8Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

In the course of testing, X30 Ultra was the most efficient robot vacuum/mop which could complete the task of cleaning a whole home, with 66 per cent of its battery remaining. It also did an excellent job of cleaning a mix of rooms and floors with different flooring types, including some area carpets. Its obstacle detection was great and it was able to avoid fake dog turds, socks, shoes and bundles of cables.

It's a little more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however it offers superior suction, an onboard dustbin that automatically empties into its base, and supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It even cleans the floor after vacuuming it, something we haven't seen in other robot vacuum/mop combos.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

With an elegant circular design that looks like a regular Roomba rather than the compact models this robot vacuum and mop combo is among the most attractive designs in our evaluations. iRobot's latest flagship model also is among the most intelligent, with advanced features including Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology as well as future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads).

It's also the only robotic vacuum/mop to score a perfect 10 out of 10 in our evaluations. This is due to a combination modern sensors, including a restructured lighting system, a camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could fill and empty its basestation on its own. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mops.

The X40 is, like the other iRobot products, is easy to use. It comes with a simple mobile application interface, and it integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that the X40 is still a noisy unit. This can be a problem in the mornings before work or during the night when you're trying to sleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, but it's not as pricey as Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are equally powerful and better-looking. This is a dual-purpose vacuum that's very capable however, it's going to cost you more and create more noise.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a variety of sophisticated features to help you forget about your chores. Similar to Ecovacs range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that can take the care of vacuuming and mopping, with a multifunction dock that automatically empty the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank and washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot vacuums best uses LIDAR and structured lighting to create floor plans and detect obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its top competitors. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time hazards detection however this was not completely foolproof in our tests, and was sometimes confused with obstructions or power cords.

The vacuum cleaner has an maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than sufficient to complete the task. It also has an option known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the automatic vacuum and mop robot and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the house based on how dirty those areas tend to be.

For bigger homes it's worth looking for a model that has zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean one particular area of your house by using the app or via voice commands. If you have furniture, a stairway mode is also a good option. Additionally the recharge and resume function that allows your robot vacuum to continue where it left off is ideal for busy families.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is a more efficient cleaner than you'd expect from its price tag. It does a stellar job cleaning, removing 55% of the debris we found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using one pad that has a reciprocating motion that cleans better than most of the other mop cleaners for robots we've tried. It's self-sufficient too, with a full-featured app and an auto-emptying washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through a mapping session that collects data about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you mark on the map. You can use it to make cleaning schedules, set up an area for cleaning or to prioritise your dirtiest rooms to ensure better performance. The app also gives access to a variety of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.

Its shape is more rectangular than other robot vacuums, which means it can reach corners and underneath furniture more easily. It features an impressive 8000 Pascal suction, as well as intelligent combs to remove pet hair. And you can set up a spot clean that intensely cleans a localized area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker more affordable alternative to iRobot Roomba. It is more appealing in its design, akin to Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are shaped like adorable eyes. It does a great job vacuuming, but it's more likely to get stuck on low thresholds. It is also louder than other top robot vacuums that we have test. It also has a less user-friendly app and a tiny base station that isn't able to double as a bin for emptying.
