World of Warcraft Upgrades and Item Upgrading

Upgrades increase the value of certain numeric stats on armor, weapons and rings. Upgrades can also boost bonuses like Crit chance and damage from PvE.

If the weapon's upgrade template is %, it will increase 3% of its previous damage each time it is upgraded.

The cost of upgrading an item increases as it reaches the item's current level. The cost increases as the item's level increases.

Components

Upgrade components can be added to trinkets, armor, and weapons to provide them with a boost in stats or an extra effect. They can be acquired through crafting, purchasing from vendors trading or looting. Some upgrades can also be accompanied by specific cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can only be applied to devices that have slots. The item must be upgraded to blue before the component can be used. In contrast to other mods components can only be used one time; they cannot be applied multiple times or replaced with new upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a special kind of upgrade component that is designed for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment as well as the items that are not ascending back. Infusions and enrichments can be obtained by salvaging ascended equipment or completing a mission in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade can include a suffix or prefix changing the name of the item to the upgrade (for instancethe "Canthan Armor Insignia" becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Some upgrades boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, allowing players make stronger versions of the equipment with fewer Upgrade Crystals than would be required to reach the same level of upgrade using normal methods.

A 'boost upgrade' can modify the attack or defense properties of a weapon, or armor. These upgrades can be made from the Portative Forging Station once the player completes the cutscene and defeats the Crazed Mechanic. These upgrades are available for purchase them from the cash shop or by obtaining them from enemies when upgrading other gear.

The player is able to have the maximum of five boost upgrades at a time; each upgrade increases the probability that a better-quality version of the item upgrader kit will drop in the next reset. This gives players an incentive to upgrade their gear even in the event that they don't know what will be improved after an update.

The process of upgrading an item can be expensive and it is likely that the item will be obsolete or even break if the upgrade fails. If an item is not able to upgrade, the amount of accumulated experience in its growth bar is reset to zero. In addition the item will be deducted any bonus it earned, including crit chance and attack damage, as well as any additional effects associated with the effect (for example, increased heal over time or the speed of reloading). The player can continue to use their weapon or armor after the failure.

When an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied from lowest to the highest.
