In Path of Exile, item upgrading is among the best ways to upgrade your gear without relying upon massive drops or trade. This article will show you how to upp your gear effectively.

Upgrades in equipment can add an additional bonus to the item's base stats. The bonus is depending on the rarity and strength of the upgrade component.

Components

Upgrade components are the parts that improve your armor and weapons better. You can get them from the destruction of enemies, finding them in item spheres, or buying them from karma merchants. You can also salvage them from equipment containing the components, or by utilizing high-end salvage kits like Black Lion Salvage Kit and Ascended Salvage Tool. Upgrade components aren't destroyed when you remove them from an item upgrader.

Upgrade components are typically used to upgrade an item, however, they can also be used for other reasons. They can be stacked in order to increase the level of the amount of experience gained by upgrading equipment or weapons. They can be made for additional benefits. A crafted glyph can increase the chance of upgrading its target while a boost upgrade increases the attack or defense attributes of a weapon.

Selecting an upgrade template from the GUI will allow you to connect it to an item. It will display a list of upgrade components that the item can be upgraded to. In addition to the multiplier of experience every item also has the maximum number of upgrades that it can receive. The number of upgradeable items is determined by their upgradeable rank and the kind of upgrade they are able to receive. For example, the highest possible weapon upgrade is a weapon of tier 10. The most common weapon upgrade is a gun with tier 6 and an armor upgrade of tier 5.

Sets

A set is a set of items that share the same bonus. Each item can be upgraded at least once. The upgrade will increase the amount of bonuses you can expect to receive. The first time you upgrade the set piece or weapon will give it a +1 increase to its primary stat. After subsequent upgrades, the primary stats will be enhanced even more (for instance, +1 for 12+/13+/14+) and each time an item is upgraded one of its stats will increase randomly.

Upgrades can also increase the damage base of a weapon. This may be important for certain builds. However, weapons are not upgraded to have a greater maximum defense roll than their base.
