1. iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO

The i3+ EVO and its sibling, the i3 EVO, are identical robots that differ only in that the i3+ has self-emptying features. The i3+ is a great option for those looking for a an entirely automated, hands-free cleaning experience, but want to manually empty the robot's dustbin when it is full.

Both robots are proficient in removing dirt and dust particles on hard floors and carpets, and they can easily move around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates smart maps of your home that aid the i3+ EVO navigate and clean in a way that maximizes efficiency. The i3+ isn't able to feature obstacle avoidance features like the i7+ or any other top-rated robots we tested. It could get stuck on power cords or socks, and may have trouble navigating between different surfaces, like carpet and hardwood.

iRobot suggests that you clean the area in which the i3+ EVO vacuums prior to using it. This includes getting rid of any toys or other clutter it might encounter. It's also recommended to keep the dustbin and filter clear so they don't become clogged with dirt. When the i3+ EVO’s internal bin is empty or the battery is low it returns to the docking station, and it automatically takes the dirt out of the docking station's external dustbin. Then it continues cleaning where it began. The i3+ EVO's battery lasts for about an hour and a half continuous use, and it takes about three hours to fully recharge.

2. iRobot i7+ Roomba

The iRobot Roomba i7+ is the most powerful model in the iRobot flagship line, and it is equipped with the most recent features. It is self-charging and self-navigating. However, the most important feature is its self-emptying bin. This will eliminate the need for regular maintenance.

The Roomba i7+ can keep up to 10 automatic floor vacuum plans and their names using Imprint Smart Mapping, a system that lets it create maps of rooms so that it can clean them more efficiently. It also works with iRobot Home to schedule cleaning tasks, and you can direct your robot using the app or voice.

The i7+ is more efficient and more maneuverable in our tests than the eufy RoboVac G30. It also cleaned large pet hair pieces from any surface, including carpeting. The biggest advantage over the Eufy is its self-emptying garbage bin which eliminates the main sources of maintenance and lowers the cost of recurring maintenance.

We were also amazed by the i7+'s compatibility Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services, which we used to instruct the robot to start, stop or pause its cleaning routines and to move around the room and sweep the area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ with these services. When connected we were able to give the i7+ voice commands like "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home App also offers options for managing i7+ settings and evaluating performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

This tiny Dyson model is a sports car in a sea of vacuums with cords that feel like minivans and buses. It's powerful enough to replace a traditional stand-up vacuum in a majority of homes, but it is also compact enough to fit on a coffee table or bookcase.

The V10 is powered by seven cells of energy-dense Lithium-ion batteries that produces power that is not fading for 60 minutes. The advanced whole-machine filtering system is able to trap allergens and then lets cleaner air into your home. Its specialized head uses stiff nylon bristles that penetrate deep into carpets and collect large dust or crumbs. It has three suction modes that can be adapted to suit the task. It is able to quickly change between handheld and automatic floor cleaners vacuum, and vice versa.

This model also has an accessory dock that can charge to 100% in around 3.5 hours and provides easy access to two attachments and the Wand clip. This is a huge improvement over earlier Dysons models, that require a long charge and are difficult to store.

The V10's main drawback is its limited run time. The claims of its marketing that it can provide up to 60 minutes of run time are not true, as CR's testing shows. This is a typical and not a remarkable time to run the battery-powered cordless vacuum. That's still enough run time to vacuum the majority of an average-sized house but not long enough to clean every spot (though an additional run-through often can be effective). However, this model doesn't have its benefits: It's lighter and maneuverable than older cordless Dysons and its vacuuming performance is significantly better on carpets with low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694

One of the most well-known robot vacuums, the 694 is a basic model that's a great choice for people who don't want to invest too much on a robotic. It's capable of sucking up all kinds of debris in our testing, and it often goes over the same areas many times to give a thorough clean. Its flat front design allows it to reach corners and edges of walls.

Its intelligent navigation system makes use of iAdapt technology to steer clear of obstacles and navigate your home. However, it lacks the capabilities for mapping of more advanced models, like our top picks, the i3+EVO and j7+ Series. As a result, it can sometimes get stuck on things like phone cords or low furniture, and it often is power-depleted before returning to its base.

In our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ excelled on hard floors and handled dog hair (on carpet) quite well, cleaning up 86 percent of it. However, it did not do particularly well at avoiding taller objects like cords and socks which was disappointing.
