WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a boosts in specific statistics. Each upgrade increases the item level by +3. A random additional substat is also added to each upgrade.

The upgraded gear typically has a more value in trade regardless of whether it has low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or a very high stat variance (like Eth titan weapons). These types of gear get less value from upgrading due to the necessity to roll to get a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by giving the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied on any kind of armor or weapons. However, the item that is used for the upgrade will be consumed forever and will not be able to be used again. Upgrades can be applied to enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear at any time by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To keep your gear up-to-date it is recommended that you visit the upgrader each few weeks.

The cost of upgrading will vary based on the current item level of the gear being upgraded, but will always be cheaper than buying new equipment from other sources. For example upgrading a Benthic chest to ilvl 385 will cost 20 recycle points while buying a similar item from another player will costs 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to upgrade weapons, armor, tools, and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased from item upgraders NPCs for various currencies. They can also find them on random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be used on any tool, weapon or armor. The button will show the preview of an item Level upgrade's next upgrade level when there are enough materials.

Upgrade costs differ based on the slot for the item upgrading and the current level of the item. For example, weapons will cost more than bracers, or gloves. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a few crests, with certain upgrades having a discount to reduce the cost of Flightstones or crests used. After an item has been upgraded to a certain level it is able to be degraded and returned to the upgrader for a lesser amount of both currency types.

Many locations offer item upgraders which include the main island and some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade coupon and a possibility of getting a new recipe. The discount for upgrades increases depending on the amount of items being upgraded. It can also be increased by requiring players to complete specific achievements or complete quests.

Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II is no upgrader for items available at the start of Icewind Dale. The NPCs who are able to facilitate upgrades are only accessible via a variety of ways. This is both a benefit as well as a disadvantage.

In Season 3, many new features were added to the upgrade system. Once a player obtains an upgrade to a particular level for an item in an armor slot, upgrading other items to that same item level will be less expensive, even if they belong to a different gear set.

Crests

The new currency system isn't complicated to use, however it brings some changes to the upgrade items process. When a piece has reached the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it will no longer require Flightstones. This change lets players upgrade their gear to the highest level possible on all of their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

It's also crucial to choose crests with care, since they only have one use. For instance, it's best to use all of your Whelpling-rank crests on the top gear you have available and save Drake and Wyrm crests to use for the next set of upgrades you plan to create. This is especially true for items like rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character which can only be eligible to take advantage of the account-wide discount when all slots are filled with high-quality gear.
