Path of Exile Item Upgrading

Upgrades to items allow players to enhance their weapons and gear with new affixes, increasing its base stats or adding additional perks. To upgrade items, the player must have the item in their inventory and access the kiln.

Items that have weak bases, such as rings, can be upgraded into more robust bases. Items with strong bases, like the Titans of eth have little change in their stats.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be slotted into weapons, armor, trinkets and gathering tools, giving an attribute bonus or extra effect when the equipment is used. They can be purchased from vendors, found in loot from enemies, or obtained from missions and chests. Some upgrades can have additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level to upgrade.

To upgrade a weapon, armor or other item in the game, the player must select it and then click the Upgrade button on the toolbar. The screen will show on the right-hand side of the screen a preview of the expected upgrade stats and the necessary component or materials.

There are three types of universal upgrades (which include gems) Prefix upgrades and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, like gems, can be placed on any type of equipment. They offer a lower bonus than upgrade components that have a specific type restriction. Infusions are jewels that are only available in legendary and ascended equipment. They provide the same bonuses as jewels, however they cannot be used in other equipment. Suffix upgrades are able to be placed in gathering tools, include their name at the end of the name of the item they are attached to, for example adding the word Glyph to the Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor would make it a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.

In the instance of upgrades for gathering tools If a player replaces one glyph with another, the old glyph will be returned to the inventory. If you replace any other upgrade component the item will be destroyed, with the exception for the inscriptions that can be freely swapped.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade system differs from previous versions in several key ways. If an item doesn't reach its maximum level, the NPC grants the player the option to transfer it to a new character and re-infuse the item with a different set of upgrades. This process can take up to two hours and will cost the same amount of materials. However it has a lower success rate.

Rerolling
