How to Replace an audi keyfob G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace audi key fob the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails the ECU will show the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test as there are various connector pins, and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this part, check for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine with no sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car can start when the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is connected but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I don't know what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate gearbox speed counter or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire in the gear. If you experience any of these problems, it is likely that your sensor is failing and should be replaced. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially if they're an Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this part is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the cause of many issues in your vehicle.
