Diablo 4 Item Upgrades

Item upgrades allow players to increase the level of items that can be equipped, such as weapons or armor, as well trinkets to a certain level. They can be purchased at any item upgrader NPC with the appropriate currency.

Upgrade components are integrated into equipment to give attribute bonuses and extra effects. These are mostly slot-restricted, but there are some universal upgrades.

Rerolling

In Diablo 4, a player can roll a new upgrade to an item. This is accomplished through the Level Up mechanic, which stops the game and shows the four randomly chosen upgrades. Universal upgrades can be used on any kind of equipment. These upgrades provide smaller rewards than those restricted by type, but are much easier to obtain. Some of these upgrades are gems, that can be made by a jeweler, and they can be utilized in any trinket slot. Other upgrades are inorganic augmentations that can only be used in weapons, and offer a small advantage that does not increase damage.

Requirements

Upgrades are an essential part of improving the strength and efficiency of your characters during combat. Upgrades can increase the stats of an item upgrader kit, or even add a prefix or suffix. The amount of stats that an item upgrading can be upgraded depends on its rarity. Upgrades are available in dungeons and raids or purchased from vendors. You can also obtain them as a random item or by collecting other players' loot.

There's no tenable game design solution to the problem of the "not worth it" feeling that some players experience when upgrading certain items. Ideally, the game would give more information about an upgrade in its compare interface, for instance "X stats gained and X stats lost." This is not practical to implement due to the complexity of the process of comparing. There is simply not enough space to implement it correctly in the UI.

A script that checks the requirements of an item's upgrade before allowing the item to be upgraded is a different solution. This method is ideal for systems with only a small amount of items that can be upgraded and have simple upgrade dependencies. A sword can be upgraded from Sword+1 to Sword+2. A script could look up the Item Definition attribute for each upgrade, and then set an Item Status of "upgraded" to show that the upgrade was valid.

This option is more flexible, but requires some additional code. It is not suitable for complex systems.

A second solution would be to allow players to upgrade their weapons and armor. These upgrades, often referred to as Reforges by some, improve the power of the item, while reducing its cost. Reforges' power varies, but the Orb of Transmutation or Orb of Embrace are the most powerful.

Costs

The upgrade of a piece of equipment can boost its physical strength, spell power and health (for armor and rings) or give it bonuses when it's in your inventory. You can acquire upgrade components by crafting or buy them from vendors. You can also collect or drop them from other players, or collect them as a reward. Upgrade components can be put into armor, weapons, and trinkets. They can also be mounted on gathering tools. Most upgrade components can only be replaced with an Upgrade Extractor. The only exception is glyphs. They can be salvaged using the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or the Ascended Salvage tool.

Upgrading an item level upgrade can cost gold or Dilithium depending on the type of item. Many upgrades also require Flightstones or crests. The amount of Flightstones and Crests needed to upgrade an item is determined by the level of the item. Blizzard also sets a maximum upgrade level. Upgrades to the highest level are expensive especially when it comes to upgrading PvE gear.

Upgrades can also alter the weapon's ammunition or damage die size. They can also alter the special characteristics of a weapon like its bulky or operative property, or hand requirement. Some upgrades can change the appearance of the weapon.

While increasing stats is the primary goal of upgrading items, you should consider the costs associated with upgrading an item before making a decision. You may prefer to make use of your gold for upgrading rare items, but don't spend it on ordinary or magic-tier items. Upgrades to these items can waste precious resources, and you'll soon discover that rare equipment is superior to them.
