World of Warcraft Upgrades and Item Upgrading

Upgrades can boost the value of weapons, armors and rings. Upgrades can also boost bonuses like Crit chance and PvE Damage.

If the weapon's upgrade template ends in %, it will be able to gain an additional 3% of the previous damage for every time it is upgraded.

The cost of upgrading an item is determined by the item's level. The cost increases as the item level increases.

Components

Upgrade components can be incorporated into weapons, armor and trinkets to provide them with a boost in stats or an extra effect. These can be obtained through crafting, buying from vendors, trading or looting. Some upgrades can also be accompanied by special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components are only available to equipment that has a slot. The item must be at least upgraded to blue before a component can be used. Unlike other mods, upgrade components can only be used one time; they cannot be applied multiple times or replaced with upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a particular kind of upgrade component that is that is designed for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment and some of the items that are not ascending back. Infusions and Enrichments can be obtained by salvaging equipment from the ascended state or completing a quest in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix can be added to an upgrade, thereby changing the name of the item upgrader mod it's used on (for example 'Canthan Armor Insignia',' changes to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades can increase the Mark Rarity or Level of an item, which lets players create stronger versions with less upgrade crystals than they require to achieve the same level with normal methods.

A boost upgrade can alter the attack or defense characteristics of a weapon or armor.
