WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades provide a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade increases the level of an item by +3. A random substat is also boosted alongside every upgrade items.

The upgraded gear typically has a higher trade value as long as it meets low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or very high stat variance (like eth titan weapons). The latter see less value from upgrading due to the need to roll for a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The upgrader for items allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher item level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the Item level Upgrade will be consumed and can't be used again. Upgrades can be applied to the enchantments.

The upgrader can be found in all major cities, and can be visited anytime to upgrade your gear. To keep your gear current it is recommended you visit the upgrader every couple of weeks.

Upgrades can cost more based on the level of the item, but they will always be cheaper than purchasing new gear. Upgrades like upgrading a Benthic chest to 385 ilvl will cost you 20 recycle points. Buying a similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to purchase weapon, armor, tool and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased by players from item upgraders NPCs for various currencies. They can also find them in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be applied to any tool, weapon, or armor. button, which will display an image of the item at its next upgrade level if the player has sufficient materials.

The cost of upgrading varies based on the item slot, and the current item level. For example, weapons will cost more than bracers, or gloves. Each step costs 15 Flightstones plus a certain number of crests. Some upgrades give discounts on Flightstones. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain amount it is able to be downgraded and sold to the upgrader for a lower price.

Many locations have upgraders for their items in addition to the main island and a few outposts. The NPCs offer an upgrade coupon as well as the possibility of getting the latest recipe. The discount for upgrades increases with the number of items being upgraded, and can be increased by having players complete specific achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at beginning unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. Instead, the NPCs that can be used to upgrade are acquired via a variety of means which is both an improvement and a drawback.

In Season 3 the upgrade system was modified a bit, and several new features added. After a player has earned an upgrade to a specific level of an item upgrader kit for a specific armor slot, upgrading further items to that level will cost less, even if they are part of another set of gear.

Crests

Players have several options for upgrading their gear in WoW. Flightstones are an option that is accessible to everyone who wants to upgrade. Crests are more specific and are utilized during specific item level upgrades. Crests are a key element of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1, and come in four ranks.

The first thing to remember is that crests can only be spent on equipment of a particular rank, and that each rank has its own requirements for upgrading. The most basic and straightforward upgrade path costs 15 crests, while the more complex one requires as many as 20 crests depending on the kind of gear being upgraded.

Players can obtain crests by completing content of the appropriate level, whether that involves walking around and engaging in outdoor activities to get lower-tier gear, raids or dungeons of any difficulty for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses or dungeons for gear that is used in the endgame. Crests can be exchanged at an item upgrader NPC, like Cuzolth in Dornogal or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to obtain the appropriate upgrade paths and steps.

Utilizing these new currencies isn't that difficult, but the system does introduce some changes to the overall upgrade process. When a piece of equipment reaches the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer), it will no longer require Flightstones. This allows players to upgrade their equipment to the highest possible ilvl on all of their characters, instead of relying on seasonal loot.

It's also essential to use crests in a wise manner, as they have only one purpose. It is best to put your Whelpling-rank Crests on the top-quality equipment you can find, and keep Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next set of upgrades. This is particularly relevant for trinkets and rings that occupy multiple slots on the character that will be able to benefit from the account-wide discount if all slots are filled with top-quality equipment.
