The Best Robot Hoover

The Q5 Pro and its sibling the more expensive Q7 Max Series, are among the most powerful robot vacuums we've test. They have motors that are top-of-the class and can handle up to 5,500 Pascals. As with other top iRobot models (including the top pick) they employ smart mapping technology to create precise floor plans and eliminate common obstacles like cords and furniture legs. The robots also have a feature called Carpet Boost that boosts its power when it senses dirt on the carpet.

The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored very well in our tests of floors with no carpet, and they are particularly adept in removing hair from dogs. There are some issues however, which hinder them from being our first option. One of them is that the Q5's navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance, so it's prone to get caught up in socks and shoes and couldn't navigate rooms with a lot of people efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of a room.

Still, it's very good for those who want to save money on a Roomba from iRobot and have a mostly bare-floor home or office. It's also quiet and works when you're at work or at school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. And it's less effective at mopping, using disposable wet wipes that don't hold on very well and can't deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 is self-emptying cradle, however. And, if you need to, you can switch the mopping pad for a dry one in just a few seconds.

2. IRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact elegant vacuum cleaner that can also sweep floors. Its intelligent cleaning maps and quick navigation make it easy to clean and effective in dealing with larger particles such as pet hair. It also has an impressive suction system and self-emptying bin. It's the best robotic hoover for carpets but it isn't as effective as some of its competitors in terms of deep cleaning.

This high-performance vacuum and mops utilizes sensors that help it avoid obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the patterns of your home over time and provide more efficient cleaning. You can alter its cleaning schedule and set up zones through the well-designed app. It comes with a battery life that is comparable to other models.

You can instruct the X30 Ultra to remove its mops and to extend them when it's in a carpeted area, which helps prevent cross-contamination. The flex arm is perfect for getting under low-lying furniture and along baseboards. It's not as effective on the washboard as our other Editors' Choice Picks, the Ecovacs Ozmo N8Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

During tests, the X30 Ultra was the fastest robot vacuum/mop that could complete the entire house with only 66 percent of its battery left. It also did an excellent job cleaning a variety of floors and rooms that had mixed flooring types, including certain area carpets. Its obstacle detection was top-of-the-line, and it nimbly avoided fake dog socks, turds, shoes and cables.

It's a bit more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but it has superior suction and an onboard bin that is automatically empty into the base. It also supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can clean the floor even after it vacuums. This is a feature we haven't seen before on other robot vacuum/mop combination.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

With a sleek, circular design that looks more like a regular Roomba than the competitors' boxes this mop and robot vacuum is among the most attractive designs in our evaluations. The latest model from iRobot happens to be its smartest and has advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology as well as future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot cleaner that can autonomously wash mop pads).

It's also the only robotic vacuum or mop that scored an absolute 10 out of 10 in our evaluations. This is thanks to a mix of high-tech sensors, including a structured lighting system, a camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation in a self-contained manner. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mops.

The X40 is, like the other iRobot products, is easy to use. It comes with an easy mobile application interface and is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only issue is that the X40 still a loud unit. This can be a problem in the mornings prior to work or during the night when you're trying to fall asleep.

It's also a bit expensive, though it's not as pricey as the Ecovacs Omni or Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra Both of which are similarly capable and more attractive. If you're willing to live with a bit more noise and some extra cost it's a powerful two-in-one that will please almost everyone.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the high-end robot vacuum and mop. It has a range of features that are advanced and will help you forget your chores. Similar to Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that can take charge of both mopping and vacuuming. It comes with a multi-function dock that automatically empty the vacuum's trash bin, refills its water tank, and cleans and dry its mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of an array of LIDAR and structured light to map out floor plans and identify obstacles, making it more efficient than its top rivals. It also comes with a front-mounted camera to detect hazards in real-time however, it wasn't foolproof in our testing and was occasionally confused by power cords or other obstructions.

Its vacuum has a high suction capacity of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to finish the job. It also has a feature known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house depending on how dirty the areas tend to be.

For bigger homes it's worth looking for models with spot or zone cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean one particular area of your house by using the app or via voice commands. If you have lots of furniture, a stair-mode is also a good option. For busy families, a recharge feature and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to resume where it left off can be extremely useful.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is a more efficient cleaner than you might expect from its price tag. It has a great vacuuming performance, picking up 55% debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using one pad, which uses a reciprocating motion, which does a better job cleaning than the other mop cleaners for robots that vacuum and mop we've examined. It's also highly self-sufficient, with a fully-featured app, and a self emptying base that can be washed.

The iRobot application is designed to help you navigate a mapping run which collects information about your floorplan and any "no go" areas you've marked on the map. You can use it to create cleaning schedules, plan the perfect spot for cleaning or sort out your rooms with the most dirt to improve performance. The app comes with a variety of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.

Its shape is more rectangular than other robot vacuums, which means it can reach corners and underneath furniture better. It also has a strong suction of 8,000 Pascal suction and combs with intelligent technology for pet hair. It also has the ability to set up a spot cleaning that thoroughly cleans a particular area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker and less expensive alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It is more appealing in its design, akin to Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are designed to resemble cute eyes. It does a good job vacuuming, but it is more susceptible to be caught by low thresholds and is louder than the other top robot vacuums we've tried. It also comes with an app that is less intuitive and has a tiny base station that does not double as a bin for emptying.
