Both the Q5 and the Q7 Max Series get very high scores on our floor tests that test for bare floors, and they're particularly adept in cleaning pet hair. However, they have several flaws that prevent them from being our top pick. One of the Q5's shortcomings is its navigation system does not include AI-powered obstacle avoidance. It's thus susceptible to get stuck on shoes and socks and couldn't navigate densely packed rooms very well during our tests. It doesn't also have a camera that can see around corners.

It's still a good value for those whose home or office has lots of unfinished flooring and you're looking to save money. It's also extremely quiet and can be used while you're at work or at school. The only thing it lacks that you won't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 does have an auto-emptying dock, however. And, if you have to change the mopping pad to dry ones in just a few minutes.

2. IRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact elegant vacuum mop cleaner robot cleaner that can mop floors. Its intelligent cleaning maps and quick navigation make it easy to clean, and efficient in tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also features self-emptying dustbins, powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best robot vacuum that vacuums and mops hoover for carpets, although it isn't as efficient as some of its competitors in deep cleaning.

This high-performing combination vacuum and mop makes use of advanced sensors to avoid obstacles and pet waste and it will learn the layout of your home over time to ensure more efficient cleaning. You can change the schedule of cleaning and even customize zones through the well-designed app. Its battery life is average compared to similar models.

When the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted area, you can instruct it to remove and extend its mops. This helps prevent cross-contamination. Its flex arm is ideal for getting under furniture that is low and along baseboards. It's a bit more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however it offers superior suction, an onboard dustbin that automatically empties into its base, and supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It is able to clean floors even after it has vacuumed. This is something we haven't seen in other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

The robot vacuum and mop combination is sleek and has a circular look that looks more like the regular Roomba model than the boxy models from the competition. It is one of our most attractive looking robot vacuums. The latest flagship model from iRobot is also the most intelligent. It has advanced features, like Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads on its own).

It's the only robot vacuum that vacuums and mops vacuum/mop that has a perfect 10 in our tests, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that is fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and it boasts its own self-cleaning mop pads.

Like other iRobot models like the X40 is user-friendly, with an intuitive mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only drawback is that the X40 is still a loud unit. This can be a problem in the mornings before work or during the night when you are trying to fall asleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, but it's not as expensive as Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 MaxV Ultra, both of which are equally powerful and look better. This is a two-in-one vacuum that's extremely powerful however it's more expensive and make more noise.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the line robot vacuum and mop. It has a range of features that are advanced and will help you forget your chores. Like Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that takes charge of both mopping and vacuuming, with a multifunction dock that automatically empty the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank and washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot employs an array of LIDAR and structured light to draw out floor plans and identify obstacles, and navigates more effectively than its top rivals. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time hazards detection but this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and could be confused with obstructions or power cords.

The vacuum cleaner has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to accomplish the task. It also features "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vac works and alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home depending on the degree of dirt they tend to be.

For larger homes it's recommended to choose one with zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean a particular area of your house using the app or via voice commands. If you have a lot of furniture, a stairway mode is also a good option. For busy families, a recharge function and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to continue from where it left off can be extremely useful.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a smarter cleaner than you would think from its price. It is a good vacuum cleaner and picked up 55% debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with one pad that has an oscillating motion that is cleaner than the other robot mop cleaners we've tried. It's self-sufficient too, with a full-featured application and an auto-emptying washable base.

The iRobot app is designed to help you navigate the mapping process that collects data on your floorplan, as well as any "no go" areas you've marked on the map. You can use it to create cleaning schedules, plan the perfect spot for cleaning or prioritize your most filthy rooms to improve performance. The app also grants access to a host of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.

It is also able to reach corners and under furniture better because its shape is more rectangular. It has a powerful 8000 Pascal suction as well as clever combs for removing pet hair. It also has the ability to set up a spot cleaning that thoroughly cleans a particular area.
