How to Choose the Best Robot Vacuum Cleaner

A robot vacuum will save you lots of time and hassle when it comes to regular touch-ups. The best models are capable of picking up dust, light debris and cords.

The pricier ones even mop your floors, though they aren't able to climb stairs. Find models with intelligent mapping, real-time hazards avoidance, and large self-emptying bins.

Many models do a good job of removing dust that has been embedded in carpets with a low pile, and several do a decent job at cleaning up larger debris such as orzo pasta, metal screws and pet hair. However, they can't handle small particles as well as an upright or canister vacuum, and they may be unable to pick up dirt in the vicinity of baseboards and thresholds.

For homes with carpets, a 2-in-1 robotic vacuum/mop is the best choice. You can swap out a cleaning bin to a damp mopping mat. The Roborock Q Revo, for instance, vacuums and a mops with circular pads that spin at 200 rotations per minute. The iRobot Roomba Combo i5 is another good option. It did well in our tests, and you can schedule it to sweep your home even when you're away. It can also be set to only mop, and we liked its excellent navigation on bare floors and rugs and its ability to go over and up onto furniture. The Combo i5 has a long runtime and excellent path planning for an item of this size.

If you're looking for a high-tech model, consider the Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Self-Empty robot vacuum cleaner black friday Vacuum & Mop. It comes with a huge dock that can last for weeks without having to be cleaned. It also has amazing ability to navigate and auto-empty on carpets and bare floors. It's also got a smart-mapping feature and can be programmed to only be operational during certain times of the day (a useful feature that can keep the sly kids and pets from causing chaos). The Shark is less powerful than other robot vacuum/mop combinations however, it still picks up pet hair and hair with a high degree of accuracy. It's also the best value of our top choices.

Best for Hard Flooring

Robot vacuums are ideal for hardwood floors, as they can navigate through obstacles with ease without causing damage bare surfaces. They are fantastic for removing dust and crumbs, but they struggle with pet hair or other debris. They lack the suction power of an expensive upright or canister vacuum, which is why they're not an ideal option for rooms with carpets or deep cleaning upholstery.

The best two-in-1 robots combine a vacuum and a mop and take care of the entire chore in one sweep. Find models that have an onboard sensor that can detect any changes in the flooring and adjust suction to match. Its sensors help it avoid staircases and other hazards, so you don't have to be worried about the robot falling down the stairs and breaking your hardwood.

The Eufy S1 Pro mop is designed to clean hardwood floors using downward pressure, not simply swab them to remove dirt and dust. The pads that are reusable reduce waste and spread fewer germs.
