They also put her in a tank one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of lolita blue & gold macaw advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as an ancestor and plan that would eventually take her to the open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary on Washington's west coast where she could live for the remainder of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the ocean, not an empty concrete tank.

If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals and connect with their family members until death. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. Activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her retirement from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild.

The move comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a seaside sanctuary where she could swim deep in the ocean, and possibly even reunite with the orca thought to be her mother.
