Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Armor

Armor upgrades are a form of upgrade that can be used on armor and weapon items. They increase the effectiveness of the item they are connected to. The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it is able to absorb. The upgrade of an armor piece to the highest upgrade level will increase its damage absorption. However, it's important to keep in mind that this will raise its weight, requiring it to be heavier than it was before.

There are a few different kinds of armor upgrades that are available in the game and they all have different effects. Certain upgrades give armor a greater amount of health points while others make it lighter and more powerful. The name of the upgrade will indicate the kind of upgrade the item upgrader kit can receive, as shown below.

Certain upgrades require magic or a hybrid technology and magic, which is identified by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table. Certain upgrades require charges in order to be used. All levels of jewels are crafted at the Jeweler however, there are some exceptions to this, such as the rare and legendary jewels that require you to be at a certain level to qualify for the privilege of having them. Unlike other upgrade components, jewels are able to be swapped with a jewel of the same type without damaging the original one. However it is only possible to replace one jewel in an equipment piece only once.

It is normal to use more jewels for aesthetic reasons. The jewels also improve performance and create a surface harder than metal so that repeated friction from pivots does not cause damage to the movement.

In addition to the upgrades mentioned above players can also get glyphs for their shields and weapons from a Glyphmaster. These glyphs offer a small boost and can be freely traded, but they're not guaranteed to show up as loot. Glyphs are like jewelry and can be upgraded by the Jeweler to exchange gold and Scattered Crystals. Glyphs can also be removed, which returns them to the inventory. Other upgrade components such as traits or aegis cannot be swapped, and can only be found by using an upgrade item extractor or salvaging using Black Lion Salvage Kit, or Ascended Salvage tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets can be used to provide your hero with a variety of small, but valuable, advantages. They are available in the start-up area as loot or personal story rewards. They can also be obtained through vendors and after completing road interaction. They may also be crafted by jewelers, and found or purchased at the Trading Post.

The first trinkets a player can unlock is the cloak, which grants an unimportant but beneficial boost to movement speed and evasion. The player can then acquire necklaces, amulets, and rings, in a similar way similar to how they obtained weapons and armor. Each piece of gear comes with one upgrade slot that can accommodate either a universal or jewel upgrade.
