WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades provide a guaranteed boost to specific stats. Each upgrade increases the level of an item by 3. A random extra substat is also boosted alongside every upgrade.

The upgraded gear is usually more valuable, unless it has a low requirement by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a high variance in stats (like eth Titan weapons). The latter are less valuable from upgrading due to the need to roll for a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear by giving the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapon. However, the item used to upgrade will be consumed for the duration of time and can't be used again. Upgrades can be applied to Enchantments.

The upgrader can be found in all major cities, and can be accessed anytime to upgrade your gear. It is recommended to visit the upgrader once every few weeks, to keep your equipment up-to-date.

Upgrades can cost more based on the level of the item upgrades however they'll always be less expensive than purchasing new equipment. For instance upgrading a Benthic chest to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points while purchasing the same item from another player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are useful items that can be used to improve the quality of weapons tools, armor, and other accessories. Players can purchase them through NPCs who sell upgrades to item owners in a variety of currencies. They are also available on random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be used on any weapon, tool or armor. The button will display the preview of an item Level upgrade's next level of upgrade, if there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the slot of the item upgrades and current item level upgrade level, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers, for example. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones and a number of crests, with some upgrades offering discounts to reduce the cost of Flightstones or crests used. Once an item is upgraded to a certain degree, it can be downgraded and sold to the upgrader for a lower price.

A lot of locations offer upgraders for items in addition to the main island and some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade discount and a chance to acquire a new upgrade recipe. The upgrade discount increases with the number of items being upgraded. It is also possible to be increased by having players complete some specific achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the start, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. The NPCs that can assist with upgrades are only available through a variety means. This is both a benefit as well as a disadvantage.

In Season 3, the upgrade system was altered a bit, with several new features added. After a player has earned an upgrade to a particular level of an item for a specific armor slot, upgrading further items to that level will cost less, even when they are part of another set of gear.

Crests

When upgrading gear in WoW, players have a variety of options. Flightstones are a currency that is available to everyone who wants to upgrade. Crests are the main component of the Dragonflight gear progression system that was introduced in 10.1 and are available in four ranks.

The first thing to remember is that crests are only able to be used on equipment that is of a particular rank, and every rank has different requirements for upgrading. Another notable change is that crests have one usage, so it's important to use them wisely. For instance it's best to make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests on the top equipment available and then save Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you plan to create. This is particularly applicable to trinkets and rings that occupy multiple slots on the character, which can only be eligible to take advantage of the account-wide discount if all of the slots are full of high-quality equipment.
