How to Replace an audi advanced key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are several connector pins, and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors are not firing at all. This morning i pull out the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. When I crank the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero Ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is connected, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines requires to be aware of the position and speed the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. To accomplish this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). 5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a variety of issues in your car. You can test the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should detect a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these two points.
