Choosing a Double Pushchair Twin

Find a pushchair that folds with one step and is easy to put into your boot. You may also prefer a lightweight design that's easy to navigate and manoeuvre, particularly if you have busy roads to traverse.

Side-by-Side

These are the most common type of double pushchair, and usually can accommodate two children together. They tend to be a bit wider than single pushchairs, meaning they may be less nimble on the footpaths and may be a little tricky to navigate between kerbs with a car seat attached. The extra width makes them easier to maneuver through doors, and they are more evenly distributed so that it is easier to carry around on your back.

They can be used as a twin pram from birth, and many models can be used with a carrycot or two car seat pram seats. Some can even convert into one mode by adding a basket alongside (like the Cybex Venus).

One of the most excellent examples of this is the Bugaboo Donkey 5 which, in Twin Mode, allows you to place the rear seat and carrycot side by side. This creates a completely enclosed space for twins, and is perfect for infants. Cybex is known for its ingenuity, and this single-to-double pushchair is no different. The clever frame can be expanded to take a second seat and you can use it as a twin from birth, thanks to the addition of two newborn cocoons (PS59 each) that create enclosed lie-flat spaces for infants. The large shopping basket behind the seat allows it to be used in mono mode with just one child. It comes with front and rear suspensions which means it can take on bumps and uneven surfaces better. Tandem

If you're planning to have twins you will require a tandem pushchair. This allows each child to sit and look at each one another. They are great for trips to the zoo since the kids can watch the animals together. They're also perfect for parents who have to keep an eye on their toddler and the other eye on their infant, as they can see both simultaneously.

Some tandem pushchairs offer ultra flexibility as they can convert back to single mode. This is especially handy for families with more than two kids (or only your oldest doesn't need a buggy anymore). This will save you from having to store a buggy empty which can be expensive.

The Cybex Venus, for example is a model that can be used in mono or double mode. Its frame can expand to accommodate an additional seat. This isn't the heaviest of pushchairs, but it does come with a large shopping basket which is located behind the front seat in double mode (and in the back of the seat when it's mono mode). The seats can be placed so that they face each other, or one can be set higher up so it can see at the other and see what they're doing.

Other double tandem pushchairs, such as the Joolz Geo 3 can seat one on top of the other or side-byside. They feature a sleek, compact frame that makes it easier to navigate through doorways and aisles in supermarkets and some models can also be used as a jogging or stroller on rough terrain thanks to a four-wheel suspension as well as large rear wheels.

Another advantage of a tandem pushchair is that it can take two carrycots, or a car seat, and buggy seat. This allows you to create a travel pram system right from the beginning and save money on additional purchases. It is important to remember that tandems can be heavier and longer than single pushchairs and are less stable when as you go over uneven surfaces. They also require dismantling to fit into cars.
