It's important to find a theme in which the header is easy to customize. Some of them require you to go into the code. If you are not knowledgeable in HTML, this can be a major pain. It can also help to find a premium theme which offers support. This generally comes in the form of a forum where people can ask questions and get answers. Sometimes, you will find one with e-mail support. Try to choose a designer who has a good reputation.

Upload the theme files to your site's theme folder on the serve (wp-content-themes). Log into your site's admin area and click on appearance to activate the new theme.

Sometimes with themes I use, I like to replace top horizontal navigation menu bars, to drop-down horizontal navigation style menu bars that I prefer. I also often alter the header .php and the footer .php files (these are some of the theme's template files) to change the default appearance somewhat of the top and bottom parts of my blogs. I use various plugins to add some features to my blogs, so I have gone into some files of the template files and added some code to make these plugins work the way I want them to. Nothing too complicated really, just some minor PHP, XHTML, and CSS tweaking.

How important are widgets? Some WordPress themes are very widget-friendly, and others are not. If you have widgets that you want to employ on your website, you'll want to choose a theme that supports them. And, speaking of support, you'll want to make sure the theme you choose has available support. Has the developer of that theme created other themes that are used frequently? What are the comments and feedback on the theme like? You don't want to use a theme that has no support behind it. You'll just be setting yourself up for a lot of hassle.

There are many great themes out there. You can find something that you like no matter the size of your budget. A lot of the themes you can get for free and will work great if you are blogging. But if you want more color, better graphics and additional functionality, you might consider a paid theme.
