In the Thursday Next series of novels, notably Something Rotten, Jasper Fforde depicts an alternative world in which croquet is a brutal mass spectator sport. Croquet is recognized as the first Olympic sport to include female participants. On Feb. 22, the team competed at the Mavsconi Cup VI hosted by UT Arlington, What is a billiards club and computer engineering junior Chi-Quynh Nguyen won first place for C-Class. This was probably the true office of the swabbers.

After the swabbers were dropped (and it is probable that they were not in general use in the eighteenth century), our national card game became known simply as Whist, though still occasionally spelt whisk. Dr. Johnson does not positively derive Whist from the interjectio silentium imperans; he cautiously explains Whist to be "a game at cards, requiring close attention and silence." Nares, in his Glossary, has "Whist, an interjection commanding silence;" and he adds, "That the name of the game of Whist is derived from this, is known, I presume, to all who play or do not play." He, however, in his preface, well remarks that he knows "the extreme fallaciousness of the science of etymology when based on mere similarity of sound;" but in the case of Whist, he has allowed similarity of sound to master his judgment. "The tables we have are two feet smaller than the tables we compete on and they need to be more well-maintained. Doc., Oxon. published "The Theory of the Modern Scientific Game of Whist," a work which contains a lucid explanation of the fundamental principles of scientific play, addressed especially to novices, but of considerable value to players of all grades.

Similarly, British terms predominate in the world of snooker, English billiards, and blackball, regardless of the players' nationalities. Other nations compete in Tier 2 and Tier 3 World Team Championships. I wanted to actually have an official team. Criminology junior Jeremiah Kincaid said he was approached to be president of the former billiards club last semester since all the officers had graduated, and he wanted to turn the club into an official team through UREC to make organizing practices and tournaments easier. In addition, having access to quality equipment such as cues, tables and balls makes practicing even more enjoyable - no matter what your skill level may be! When the tables aren’t in good shape, gameplay is heavily affected because the ball can curve or change angles no matter how straight a player hits the ball.
