WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades provide a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item by 3. Each upgrade also boosts the random substatus.

The more modernized gear generally has a greater value for trade, unless it has inherently low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or very high stat variance (like Eth titan weapons). The latter are less valuable from upgrading due to the necessity to roll for a perfect model.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear by transferring the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of armor or weapon. However, the item level upgrade used to upgrade will be consumed for the duration of time and can't be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to enchantments.

The upgrader is located in all major cities, and can be visited anytime to upgrade your gear. To ensure that your equipment is up-to-date, it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every couple of weeks.

The cost of upgrading will depend on the current item upgrader kit level of the gear being upgraded, but will always be less expensive than buying new equipment from other sources. Upgrades like upgrading a Benthic chest to 385 ilvl will cost you 20 recycle points. If you purchase a similar item, it will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for weapon, armor, tool and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased by players through NPCs who sell upgrades to item owners in a variety of currencies. They can also find them in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be applied to any weapon, tool, or armor. The button will display the preview of an item's next level of upgrade, when there are enough materials.

Upgrade costs differ based on the item slot, and the current item level. For instance weapons cost more than gloves, bracers or bracers. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a few crests, with some upgrades offering discounts to lower the cost of Flightstones or the crests used. Once an item is upgraded to a certain degree it is able to be downgraded and sold to the upgrader for a lower price.

Upgraders for items are available in many places on the main island and some outposts. The NPCs provide an upgrade discount and a chance to acquire a new upgrade recipe. The discount on upgrades increases when more items are upgraded. It can also be increased by having players finish certain achievements or quests.

In contrast to Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II there is no item upgrader available at the start of Icewind Dale. Instead the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades must be acquired through several methods that are both an improvement as well as a disadvantage.

In Season 3, many new features were added to the upgrade system. When a player has an upgrade to a particular item level for a particular armor slot, upgrading other items to the same level will cost less, even if they are part of a different gear set.

Crests

Another important change is that crests only have one usage and it's crucial to make use of them in a responsible manner. For instance, it's best to utilize all of your Whelpling rank crests on the top gear you have available, and then keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you're planning on making. This is particularly applicable to trinkets and rings that occupy multiple slots on the character, that will be able to benefit from the account-wide discount when all of the slots are filled with high-quality gear.
